>raised a few rabbits growing up for meat
>They were ok
>Had one notable male who was super chill and the boss, chased the dogs and everything that made me think rabbits weren't so dumb and skiddish so he was spared
>Ended up stop having them for meat and became house pets
>Ok rabbits but not very playful and were skiddish
>My last rabbit I got was a mini rex/harlequin mix or some shit that someone had approached me with it under his jacket at 2am in an empty parking lot
>Traded it for a pack of smokes
>he was the most bitchin rabbit ever
>Did sweet kick flips off us and the walls, mastered backflips and and side flips
>Threw scissors at people, flipped all the things
>Played hide and seek and tag where he would run up to you, flip off of you and run away until you 'tagged' him
>Would make weird growling noises and stomp if you ignored him
>Would throw his brush at us and if we didn't brush him, he would roll over it and brush hiself
>Left him in the care for three days of someone who is no longer my friend
>He must have not been fed or given water since by the time I got home he was basically dead and the vet couldn't do anything
>Rip Amontillado

I have yet to get another rabbit because I feel like I'd be too biased if they didn't turn out any where near as boss as he was. I there any specific breeds of rabbits that are known for being awesome? My friends have had buns but they didn't compare.
>>
Hello, bros. I need your help. I bought a cute bunny last week. Everything's been fine and dandy but suddenly he just litters A LOT. He barely lets me touch him, or gives me any attention when i attempt to pet him. I back off when he backs off, i obey all the rabbit rules. I let him roam freely through my apartment.

But fuck if this isn't being stressful. He's being like a fluffy fish you can barely interact with. Cats are assholes but at least some of them are affectionable. What can i do? He shits and pisses A LOT, ALL DAY. And i just feel so damn guilty when i think about getting rid of him, for he is so adorable, and he may not really know what is happening. Please give me advice.

He likes 2 sleep under my bed sometimes especially if im in bed too we're like bunk mates
>>
>>2408482
He isn't spayed/neutered, no. Is that the solution?
>>
>>2408204

Rabbits are social, like a lot of space, and fresh veggies. Hopefully you have another bunny.
>>
>>2408204
He's getting accustomed to the new territory, probably marks the place. Our first bun used to do that for some time when we got her. She stopped completely after we sttled down in new apartment and spayed her. Now she literally never does this outside of tray.

Also, your bun may be picking up a place where the toilet place is going to be. Find where it likes to shit/piss more and ideally put a tray there. Or if you don't like the place, try placing the tray where you think it's right and drop some of the feces/napkin soaked in urine in it for bun to recognize it as a new toilet place.

Once they reach sexual maturity, bunnies lose control of their litter habits. Spaying/neutering is a surefire way of fixing this, assuming they had some litter habits to begin with. My buns we're somewhat litter trained as babies, then they started humping each other and pissing in the most inconvenient places. We got them fixed, and there hasn't been a single accident since.

Don't put a harness on a rabbit. There is never a suitable situation where you need to put a leash on a rabbit. Get some barriers or something if you want to have them walk outside.

This is Poppy.

Poppy died a couple hours ago after her lungs collapsed and vets couldn't figure out why and a month short of being a year old.

Suspected something she was born with.

Absolutely fine this morning, eating her veggies as she does and running around like the good lil bunny she was. Sweetest lil mini lop ever.

And now nothing, feels so strange. 30 year old bloke all broken up over my sweet lil fluffer and my other rabbit is still searching for her.

I have a relevant story or two with some of my rabbits.

with my previous rabbit I would let him outside to play. when it was time to bring him in, I would stick my head out the door and whistle a short tune. always within the 10 minutes mark he would come running up to the door to come in. he would even scratch at the door to get my attention if I wasn't waiting at the door already.

my current rabbit will do something similar. sometimes she'll retire to her little hut for lounge time. I could be doing something in the living room or standing next to her cage talking to someone and she won't come out of her hut. but if I call her name, within a few minutes, she'll shuffle out of her hut and come up to the side of the cage, sometimes even standing up on her back legs to see what is up.

Is a one-room flat with no outdoor access enough?
>>
>>2430627
Food and vet bills will be double. If one is sick, it'll most likely get the other sick. In terms of housing, you don't need much more for two than you do for one.

That said, bonding is the hard part. They're distrusting and territorial animals even among their own kind and don't always match up. The process can take a few days to a few months, but bunnies are usually so much happier and better-behaved with a partner. Also, fembuns are usually harder to pair together, so be careful of that. Male/male is usually fine, though.

You should research bunny bonding before you do anything. Good luck.
>>
>>2430627
I have a male and female rabbit they were bonded when i got them. But they fuck all the time even though theyre spayed and neutered so youll have to get them fixed if you want m and f buns and not a million more of em. I need some advice, I have a boy bun that is timid and easily scared. I saw him at a farm supply store, he was already about 4-5 months old. Ive spent a month with him and while it seems to be getting better hes still really timid, and dislikes handling. What do?
>>
>>2431345
We got a young girl about 5 years ago from a shelter. She was abused and the most scared timid little thing I had seen. I was worried at some point she was going to scare herself to death.

Luckily I was able to put her into the spare bedroom. I started sleeping in there with her. When I went to bed I would go in with some food. Put it on her plate and go to sleep with her.

Took one night before she started coming over to me. Two nights and she would hop up on the bed to come see me. Ended up turning into the best rabbit I have ever had. She ended up bonding to me and would always greet me after work and hang around with me when I was on the couch or pc. So just try being slow with the bunny. Lay low on the floor with them and don't try to touch them. Just watch a movie in their area with them or such and just let them get used to you. It may take a little while but I bet after a while they will become much more comfortable.

I seriously need to start watching out for where I place shit on the floor. My little female dwarf has been fascinated by the back of the TV. I closed off the three primary access points, but she immediately took advantage of my lapse in judgement in the placement of the blanket basket. Pic related is her compromised attempt. She has also managed to gain access by moving a rock the size of her body that was blocking a shelf cable hole.

Just threw away three destroyed ethernet and two USB cables. Ordered 25 feet of braided steel hosing. Plastic cable protectors can't stop her. I don't expect her to be able to raw jump her way behind the cabinet, but I can never be certain.
>>
>>2431542
Most rabbits hate being picked up. Mainly because they are a prey animal. The thing is he is just trying to overcome thousands of years of instinct. When he comes over don't try to pat him for ages. Just sit and be with him or lay down with him. May take a few days but just resist the urge to pat or pick him up. Once he is completely sure it is safe they will start letting you pat them. Very quickly a lot of them learn to love it. My rabbits shove at my hand until I start giving them a pet. Also I find younger bunnies are less likely to let you pet them. The older the get they want more attention and love just sitting with you and getting pet slowly.

I went to a sort of newbie seminar where they pretty much demonized all outdoorsness for your buns, including harnesses/leashes and walks. The general idea is that your bun is one loud or strange noise away from snapping its back in a frightened scramble.

I've seen a handful of Youtube videos of people walking their bunnies on leashes, but it's always in very wide open, isolated areas. Of course, I've also seen a ton of videos of people bathing their rabbits.
>>
>>2432611
Huh.
I was under the impression they needed lots of exercise. Google seems to support this.
>>
>>2432612
They do, but common outdoor areas are just 2spooky for a household rabbit. An apartment should be enough room to run.
>>
>>2432529
>But bunners are not disposable 1 year pets
obviously, i am not 12, anon :^)
>>
I have 1 bun but i feel she is lonely should i get another bun? It would mean more poop everywhere unless theu finally grasp what a litterbox is for and maybe more carpet being pulled. Do i stay with one or get another? Id deal with all of above if theyd both get along and be happier
>>
>>2433047
>should i get another bun?
buns are supposed to be had in pairs, so yes
>>
>>2433047
For litterbox, it might be a good idea to confine it to a smaller area. They don't like it when everything gets covered in poop, so they eventually litter train themselves this way.

This is why I would suggest when you get a new bun to give it a small caged area first (or a cage) until it learns to poop in the poop basket.

But yes, get a bun. Females are hard to bond together, so get a male (if yours is spayed).
>>
>>2432611
They always claim online that rabbits are fragile creatures but honestly my one bun knows exactly where my foot is 24/7 and hence ends up getting kicked several times daily.
>>
>>2424365
Might be the times you are letting her out. My buns are most active around 6am and 11pm. Around the middle of the day they will go and sit behind the armchair and sit bunched up for hours resting.
>>
>>2433359
Same here, I accidentally roundhouse kick him in the face multiple times a day because he runs in front of my feet on purpose, but he just sits there for a few seconds and then goes on with whatever he was doing.
>>
>>2431968
You're talking about the cabinet with the TV?
Mate, they jumb above one meter easily. Only if they really want, though. When we were building a pen for our buns to close them overnight we thought that 90 cm height would be enough, since we never saw them jumping that high. Then one night my wife woke up with a mischievous bun booty on her face.
>>
>>2432611
Bringing your bun outdoors is a good thing to do.
Now harnesses are not a good idea because, from what I've heard, buns are most likely to experience stress in those, especially the first time. They're prey animal and you know how people always say don't just claw grab your bun, but pick them up from below, or otherwise they will think they got caught by a predator and get spooked? Well imagine the same feeling of being grabbed for hours straight while you walk them on the leash.

The best recommendation is to get a portable pen big enough to run around and take it with you to some really quiet park with as less people as possible and let bun just chill inside. Some people trust their buns enough to just let them roam completely free in the wild, but I wouldn't do that to mine.

Yeah, I have definitely seen her binky hard as fuck and jump higher than that stand. I think she'd have to be really bored to try though. >>
>>2435462
Your family fucked up when they bought a single bun. Not counting that:
>spay/neuter the bun
>bun should have as much space as possible
>cages are a no, ideally they should bunny proof a room and let him free roam with a dedicated space for litter/hay tray; if that's not a possibility, then the only option is a large pen/hatch on condition that bunny will be let outside to run for at least 4-5 hours a day, preferrably in the mornings/evenings, since that's when buns are active
>spay/neuter the bun
>there should always be fresh hay, ALWAYS, other shit is just addition, tell them to read what greens/veggies/fruits buns can and cannot eat, the list is too long; any kinds of grain is unrecommended
>get toys for the bun to chew on, unfortunately this is a trial and error step, since different buns have different personalities and what may interest one bun the other will just ignore; branches work well, then again check before giving them anything, some stuff may be dangerous/poisonous for the bun
>absolutely do spay/neuter the bun
>tell them to not expect the bun to be cuddly, it's not a cat or dog; bun should never get picked up unless there's a necessity (trimming nails, grooming time, etc.); tell them to learn to pick a bun right in a proper way (one hand under belly, the other one under butt/hindlegs) and absolutely NOT to pick it up by ears or claw it, since it's a huge stress/pain for the bun
>SPAY THE FUCKING BUN

That's the essential stuff, anon. Good luck. If your family is responsible, they should not stop learning stuff on their own, tell them to read shit on bunnies, preferrably from different sources.

I know why this is really important for dogs and cats but why is it for rabbits? Health or behavior? I might have a hard time convincing them to fix this one without good reason since I know they didn't even consider it for the last rabbit.

Here is an attached picture of it's current living situation. I'm seeing a lot of people saying that fleece or soft fabric bedding is ideal so I can't help but think this bedding (looks like pine or maybe cedar chips?) must be crap.

How do buns do with stairs? I live in a 2 story house and adopted a rabbit 2 months ago. He has free roam of upstairs, which is carpeted. Downstairs has the TV and stuff which hasn't been bunnyproofed yet, but easily could be. Can I trust him to go up and down the staircase without eating shit?

Also, any reason to trim his nails? They don't bother me and don't seem to bother him.
>>
>>2437566
Up the stairs should be easy for them, but going down can put a lot of stress on the smaller front paws so you might need to watch him so he doesn't tumble.

The nails should at least be trimmed once you can see them peaking out between the fur, if they get too long they can curve and curl outwards which you can imagine isn't all that comfortable. If they're shorter, they naturally wear as well so keeping them at that optimal length should save you more clippings.

Taking a mild risk by not sheathing the HDMI cable, but it has woven fabric which doesn't seem as appealing for rabbits to chew on.

Think I'm going to buy more braided steel covers so I can finally use ethernet again.

>>2438439
It was $28 for 25 feet of 1/2" sleeving. Not the cheapest, but it's better than repeatedly buying replacement cables. I must have lost about $30-40 worth of cabling last time she got in there.
>>
>>2438442
Whered you buy it from
>>
>>2438446
Amazon

https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B007KA8GOA/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o01_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1

Think I'd go for the 3/4" next time if I have to cover another power strip with a fat grounded plug. 1/2" was mildly annoying to get on, but it's a good size for AV cables and similar.

Are rabbits natural poo machines?
Might start calling mine poo poo pee pee
>>
>>2439069
Yes, things go in and poop comes out all day long
>>
>>2439069
Shitmachine is the affectionate name I call most pets given they all seem to unceasingly generate it.

as funny as it may seem but the constant flow of food and poo is incredibly important.

if a bun can't poop correctly there's not much time before things get life-threatening.

I don't know your bun, but this looks like an overkill. I've bought a regular braided sleeving and buns completely lost interest and now don't even come close to the cables.
>>
>>2429278
Poor bun. It might help, if it's possible, to take your other bun in to see her body. I don't know specifically about buns, but I've seen it in other pets where seeing the dead body of their companion gives them some sort of closure.

Sorry about your loss though.

Sounds like they are horny rabbits, even if they're altered it's possible for them to have libido. "dominance theory" is from some age old study in multiple captive wolves from multiple separate packs. People just spew shit about any sexual behavior in non-humans as a show of "dominance" because they have to feel like their pets are their children, pure, unsexual creatures to be motivated to care for them.

100% chance multiple people get triggered from this and say "b-but muh vet said!!!" "animals apart from humans DON'T have any desire for sex!"
>>
my parents bought me and my siblings rabbits (three of them) for christmas one year. (my siblings and i were between 5 and 8). they then built the rabbits a ""hutch"" outside, and let them freeze and starve to death until they ate each other. could they have gotten fined for animal cruelty?

How do buns get along with birbs? My wife fell in love with a cockatiel and now wants to bring him home. Don't know if our two buns will get mad, especially the brown one, since she's usually a really territorial and can be a real bitch. Then again, it's a birb, they shouldn't even see it as a threat, right?

If we get him we plan to keep the cage open 24/7 as we do with our buns so they can hang out together.

. Rabbits belong to the lagomorph family of animals, not rodents. Rabbits are actually more closely related to horses than they are to a rat or a mouse.
