so the caterpillar is ready to go through the change it hangs upside down and then molts and during that process it sheds all its limbs, muscle, skin, mouth parts, eyes, nervous system. Basically leaving behind an egg

for all intensive porpoises the caterpillar no longer exists. Then inside this egg a baby butterfly grows and emerges

I'm just confused as to how the caterpillar and the butterfly can be considered the same being. As far as it looks to me, the caterpillar exists as a host for the butterfly to grow inside, and the caterpillar then kills itself so the butterfly can be born

please explain

On a similar note, do imagos retain memories from when they were a larva?

Do insects even have memory?
>>
>>2402507
yes, otherwise the bee couldn't tell the colony where the flower is.

it's not memory like you have though. More like the memory your phone has.

Caterpillars are metal as fuck. They melt and digest themselves.
>>
>>2402515
Also, animals do not change species when they grow up. Plenty of animals go through those weird baby stages and look completely different as an adult. In some bug species, males and females look nothing alike but I forgot the names of the ones I'm thinking of. One was like afemale flat armored centipede.

I think OP means how can we consider a butterfly and its former caterpillar life the same individual, not how can we consider them the same species.

This article claims a study has proven that butterflies and moths can remember things from when their bodies were in larval form

The question then, did the insects experience these memories or simply inherit them as they were 'stored' in the body of the larvae before them?
Then, one must wonder, can we insects even objectively experience like ourselves or do their bodies simply react to stimulus like a computer? Surely it would be plausible that past stimulus simply altered the way their body is dictated to respond?
And, if insects cannot experience, then what defines them as distinct individuals?
>>
>>2402534
>what defines them as distinct individuals?
nothing. That's why we talk about hives and colonies and populations.

individual insects don't write novels or invent turbochargers or paint themselves orange and win presidential elections.

they are not individuals.
>>
>>2402535
Yes, but there is obviously a means by which we draw a line between one distinct organism and another.
Although I don't think you can draw a line between the caterpillar and the butterfly and claim them separate, for even if the caterpillar does "die" there is nothing separating him from the butterfly regardless.

Allow me to play doubles advocate here for a moment. For all intensive purposes I think you are wrong. In an age where false morals are a diamond dozen, true virtues are a blessing in the skies. We often put our false morality on a petal stool like a bunch of pre-Madonnas, but you all seem to be taking something very valuable for granite. So I ask of you to mustard up all the strength you can because it is a doggy dog world out there. Although there is some merit to what you are saying it seems like you have a huge ship on your shoulder. In your argument you seem to throw everything in but the kids Nsync, and even though you are having a feel day with this I am here to bring you back into reality. I have a sick sense when it comes to these types of things. It is almost spooky, because I cannot turn a blonde eye to these glaring flaws in your rhetoric. I have zero taller ants when it comes to that. You just need to remember what comes around is all around, and when supply and command fails you will be the first to go.

Make my words, when you get down to brass stacks it doesn't take rocket appliances to get two birds stoned at once. It's clear who makes the pants in this relationship, and sometimes you just have to swallow your prize and accept the facts. You might have to come to this conclusion through denial and error but I swear on my mother's mating name that when you put the petal to the medal you will pass with flying carpets like it’s a peach of cake.

but they are sort of like a parasitic organism

if the host caterpillar dies the butterfly does. Pillarbros are more like mobile wombs. A creature in their own right sure, but when the chest buster alien breaks out we don't consider the alien the same being as the person it came from

From my perspective it just looks like ship of theseus gets repaired a lot faster than in humans. Is the OP reading this the same OP who made this thread? Both are faggots, but are they the same faggot?

I am only one of those faggots
