Reptile classifieds for finding breeders of various scaled and sundry creatures

>kingsnake.com
>faunaclassifieds.com
>reptilescanada.com (Canadian breeders)
>Also check to see if there are any annual reptile shows/expos in your area as these are good places to find good animals from good breeders at partial discount

/herp/ officially official all purpose care sheet of wonder and magic

>sand a shit
>use a thermostat
>read all the caresheets
>set up your tank before you get your herp
>regulate temps & humidity levels prior to herp arrival
>do not fuck with (handle) your herp for at least 7 days after bringing it home and ideally wait until herp has eaten at least one meal (for snakes), two meals for lizards, frogs, etc.
>PVC tanks are way better for most applications and worth the extra money
>it is best to avoid chain pet stores when looking to purchase live animals as mass breeder suppliers are not especially careful about health and sound genetics... it often saves you money long term to spend a little extra up front to get a healthy animal

>Jump Start (formerly Hydrofarm) thermostat is a good basic and inexpensive thermostat for regulating ceramic heat emitters and under tank heaters (Amazon sells it)
>if you want something more advanced for temperature control, look at Herpstat products

Is a prepared diet okay for an older bearded dragon (maybe 4, 5 years old)? Is it okay to supplement it every now and then with fresh insects and veggies?

Beware online, most (well a lot) are wild caught.

Fauna usually has cb geyri (red or yellow) for sale.

I have a Mali Uromastyx myself. I got a pic of him today seems he is finally darkening up a bit and hitting his "puberty".

Spot clean droppings as needed. Clean water spots off the glass when they annoy you. Partial substrate change every six months or so unless you have a springtail/isopod cleaning crew.

Wait until gecko is regularly eating on a stable schedule before handling.

Does anybody have large enclosures?

Just finished up building a 4x4x6 enclosure for a green iguana. I'm having trouble figuring out the most efficient way to heat something that large. The basking spots are fine but I'd like to get a decent ambient temp in there too. Any ideas?
>>
>>2396151
What is your tank made of? First step i would take is to address heat loss due to lack of insulation. Additional heat can be added with a couple extra ceramic heat emitters. Heat retaining decor (rocks) will also help get the ambient up.
>>
>>2396151
I had a 4x4x5.5 enclosure I built for my iguana that got destroyed in a flood last august
I kept the room heated with a radiator in the range of 75-80 with a CHE pointed directly on his basking platform
He still preferred to sit in the window and watch cars/people go by most of the time

When I get some extra cash my next project is going to be something like 4x8x8 or 5x7x8

Currently hes in a 3x6x2.5 cage I built out of scraps of my pantry and cabinets that didnt get water on them and I just keep it ontop of a table overlooking the room so he still has some height

random question for any hot keepers/anyone else who'd like to speculate:
are venomous snakes necessarily more aggressive than non venomous ones? obviously they're more dangerous, but are they innately more inclined to bite than boas, pythons, colubrids, etc.
what are the odds of an eyelash viper biting you compared to a corn snake biting you
>>
>>2396305
Depends on the species
A black racer is more likely to bite you than a gaboon viper
The issue lies in the severity. A racers bite might not even break skin. The gaboon could kill you

Why are snakes frightening to a lot of people? I know our caveman ancestors had an instinctive fear but anyone with access to the Internet and literacy can identify a venomous and harmless snake at a relative glance. Once I learned about them I never had that instinctive fear of them again, but maybe I'm just a reptile sympathizing degenerate.
>>
>>2396817

I was never afraid of snakes so it always came as odd when people were so afraid of them like they just got locked in a room with a crocodile or some shit
Always got angry when people needlessly killed them and would parade them around like "Look at me I kill harmless animal because they are evil and i am good"
Its probably>>2396823 this though the amount of people i come across who will say with no qualms fuck all nature if it can get me a footup is mildy disturbing

On feeding days, dab a bit of cgd on your finger and rest your hand inside the tank for about 15 minutes. If gecko doesn't come to investigate no worries, just put feeding dish in and try again the following feeding day. Once they're comfortable licking food off your fingers they will usually readily climb right on to your hand. Keep handling sessions short (no more than 15 minutes).
>>
>>2396817
It's not surprising at all, they killed us as small mammals, as monkeys and they continue to do so today. They're our greatest natural predator, it's in our genes.
>>
>>2397000

Oh, I forgot to clarify: do not pursue the gecko with your cgd covered finger. Hold it still several inches AWAY from the gecko and let gecko come to you.

Paper towels is a better substrate for juvies so you can monitor their health and also for reduced impaction risk and everyone uses fake plants, they help them exercise their tails even better than many real plants
After having a hatchling die from choking on coco fiber over ten years ago, I've never housed a juvie gecko on loose substrate
That means no plants

Thank you kind anons. That's the story: I've had this turtle since I was very little so I'm really attached to it. However, since I don't live with my parents anymore, I can't take care of it as I'd like. When the tank broke my dad decided to arrange an outside pond for Turtle. I've always been egoistically against it because I fear it wouldn't recognize me anymore.

Anyway I didn't complain. The pond has a fence all around, it has sunlight and shadow in equal misure, a piece of wood provides a shelter if Turtle wants to hide, and there is a large basking zone. In theory the pond itself is made of a special turtle designed plastic that allows something related to turtles, but I don't know what at this point. He convinced me that the dirt and the ground the turtle brings in the pool, darkening the water, allow the thing to feel like a real pond to the turtle (sorry for my bad english). But I've searched in the net and generally people seem to be against it, saying the water should be clean.

My dad doesn't believe and he's also reluctant to change things since he spent a lot on money on the outside pond already. But today I checked turtle and it's wounded! Well I assume these are wounds. So my questions are:
Are these serious? What should I do?
May it be caused by the plastic? I mean maybe Turtle is injuring itself when it comes out of the pond.
May it be a disease, then?
How should I treat turtle to make it recover and how can I prevent this from happening again.

Thanks in advance, I know there are sources in the net but I trust real owners more.

How long does it take for a crested gecko to reach full size? Mine has doubled in size since I got it a year ago, but it is still much smaller than the ones I see at reptile shows.

I put fresh food in its tank every day and while I don't really notice any missing, the fact that it's still alive and there are feces in the tank is proof enough that he's eating.

Should I try rotating in insects instead of the repashy diet a couple times a week?

Reduce feeding rate to once every second day now. Yes you can do calcium dusted insects once a week. Appropriately sized dubia roaches work well for cresteds. Crickets are fine too but they're a pain to remove if your gecko doesn't eat them. Small roaches can't climb out of a glass dish with vertical sides at least 1 inch tall.

I think a frog is living on my car. It climbed onto the windshield while I was driving a couple days ago and moved into a small space between the hood and wipers where I couldn't reach. Yeah i'm in the process of building one now. It's pretty simple. You're just building a wood box with a glass door on the front and some ventilation. In my case i'm making for crested geckos so ot has to be water proof. After much research i decided to seal with marine varnish and silicone. It will take a couple months to off gas before it's safe but after that will be water tight.

If he could get it to eat small insects like crickets either field collected or store bought(indicating it's not overly stressed and at least somewhat comfortable), I'd recommend keeping it until it restores it's tail
But judging from the fact that he tried to feed it tuna, I'd say he probably won't be able to keep it alive, so let it go where you found it

Looking good. The extra plants will fill it out nicely. One thing cresteds really love is an elevated cork round, which you can do by hanging one from the screen top with twine or zip-ties. Or use one of those magnetic dealios to stick to the glass (they're kind of expensive).

mine stopped eating and developed a calcium deficiency so the vet has me giving him medicine every 12 hours now and I think this is stressing him out considerably.

I'm not familiar with grouting - how does that stuff you made handle under high temperatures, humidity, etc.? How effective is it as insulation? Does it leave any sharp/rough edges that can hurt the reptile? Thinking of doing something similar for my snake.
>>
>>2401495
well you use it to fill bathroom tile, its basically concrete
its only sharp if you dont sand it

How thick is your mix and what are you using to apply it? It seems like you have very thin even levels and no runs. Even between your wall set which seems like a bitch.

Just curious because mine either wants to set up thick or runny.

Are you just brushing on very light layers multiple times?

>Also who's that Pokemon?
>>
>>2401495
Not sure about heat, but it should be fine. You'll want to seal it with polyurethane that is water based. I don't know about the insulation, but I'm sure Styrofoam insulates. You can sand down any sharp edges.
>>
>>2401520
>seal it with polyurethane that is water based

Speaking of which, I did a ton of research on this before choosing a sealant for my arboreal tank. For an arid climate herp definitely do go with water based poly. It will cure faster and is lower VOC. However, if you really need strong water resistance there are two ways to go, one is cheap and one is expensive.

Cheap: marine varnish (oil based). Once it cures it is durable as hell. The drawback is in the lengthy curing time. Marine varnish takes upwards of a month to cure and off-gas completely and it is unsafe for your herp to be anywhere near until that time. It is safe, yes even oil based stuff, after fully curing and a wash with soap and water.

secondary cheap: line the entire interior of your terrarium with linoleum/vinyl and silicone seal the joints. This is only feasible for flat surfaces.

Expensive: epoxy resin. This is what you would use if you're attempting to DIY an outdoor pond or even a wood aquarium. Pond Armor is a popular brand for these applications.

Do you guys have any advice for someone who wants to get a crested gecko and has very little reptile experience?

Can I take it for walkies like a dog?

What's the deal with the morphs? What's a cool morph that will impress people on the internet?

It's a perfect beginner reptile.

>Can I take it for walkies like a dog?
No.

>What's the deal with the morphs? What's a cool morph that will impress people on the internet?
Morphs are just different colors and patterns.
The one that will impress the most people is the one you like best.
>>
Could you feed crested gecko diet to other reptiles? Primarily referring to the pangea brand stuff. Not as a main diet but as a treat for something like a bearded dragon or blue tongue skink.
>>

I don't see why not. Repashy makes a different product for that though. It's called Grub Pie. It has a thick jello like consistency once mixed.

Yo /herp/ I just fed my Ball for the first time today and I want to know if i did something wrong.
After swollowed most of the mouse she started to do this and it seems like she was trying to get down some coconut fiber substrate she had eaten
Will she be ok? Should I have fed her out of the terrarium so the substrate wouldn't be an issue?
>>
>>2402275
The substrate isnt an issue if it's hydrated right.
It did that it force the rat into its stomach.
I'd have pulled the substrate off it's mouth though
>>
>>2402275
Pull the substrate out of its mouth you uncaring imbecile.
Eating substrate like that on occasion isn't a huge issue though. When the substrate is hard and/or grainy, it can be especially problematic, but coconut fiber is easily digested.
Feed it out of the tank, or in an area of the tank where that won't happen, and you will be fine.

For a ball python, a tub is better, as it will hold humidity much better without any modification beyond a few air holes drilled/melted into the sides.

Keep in mind, if you use a UTH or flexwatt, you will have to heat the entire room to about 80F so that the snake will have proper ambient temperatures, as these heat sources do not raise the ambient temperatures.

Tubs can be modified to be heated with CHEs, but keep in mind you'll have the same problems as with a tank if you do this. RHPs can also be installed, but they will need bracings on the lid, and you'll have to be careful to make sure the security is not compromised and modify it accordingly.

>>2404035
Super jungles are like arabesques, they have to be super slow grown to be able to breed. Or so I've heard. Very few people attempt breeding them from what I've seen.

I'm breeding that jungle to this guy either this fall or next. AFAIK he's just a regular ghost, no clue if he has any hets or not. I got him as an adult from an individual and his breeder dropped out of the hobby. Not the best case scenario, but he was too good of quality for me to pass him up.

>>2404037
I've found that regardless of species or age, snakes tend to shed every 1-3 months on average, but I've had them go as long as 7-8 months (despite nearly doubling weight and growing half a foot).

Just give him time and he'll shed when he's ready.

Hogs aren't dwarves, but 5' is still on the larger end for a 3 year old. I feed mediums every 4 myself, but 21 days should be sufficient. 14 days will still be way too often, though, I start my neonates off eating every 10-14 days, and by 2 years they're eating every 3 weeks.

I want motley IMGs pretty bad, but I'm going to wait until I produce at least my first litter before getting an IMG.

This is another female from the breeding group, a 2 year old sunglow poss het anery. I've been slow-growing her since I got her at one month old.

The 3rd female in the group was fed a bit heavily by the breeder, and I got her as a yearling, so she's a bit bigger, but I've managed to even out her growth by putting her on a proper schedule. She's still by far the fastest-growing boa I've got, though.

I get what you're trying to say, but there is a wild range of sizes for both BCC and BCI. There are BCC that top out at 5', there are BCC that top out at 9'. There are BCI that top out at 3', and BCI that top out at 8'-9'. Just depends on the locality.

Hog Islands average 5'-7' with the potential for 8', so they're not dwarves.

>>2404644

I'll rate 5/10, because I'm not a fan of dwarf morphs, but this one is comparatively clean and bright.

Pic is the bigger 2 year old female. She's a few weeks younger than the sunglow, a poss super ghost poss het Kahl.

I feed my boas like this:

Birth-1 year: 10-14 days
1 year: no more than 14 days
2 years: 3 weeks
3+ years: 4-6 weeks

Plus, 1.5-2 year olds get fed half as often during the winter, and 2.5-3+ year olds either get completely fasted or fed half as often over the winter.

Maybe $30-$50 for a hatchling, no more than $100 for a well established yearly. And that's assuming your seller is a breeder who knows wtf he's doing. Don't pay more than $50 if he's a hobby breeder. And the photos had better be good.

Neat, from what I've read they stay smaller. Neat, I wonder if she'll hit that 7 ft size with how young she is and being power fed by her previous owner.

Why fast them over winter or is it their choice?
Never had a refused meal of my 4.5 year old female or 3 ish year old male during the winter, but then again I don't cool them down for the breeding season.

What are you feeding your 3+-year-old adults every 4-6 weeks?

>>
>>2404656
It's not a het hypo. If it carries the hypo gene at all, it will visibly be a hypo. Therefore it is a hypo, a homozygous hypo would be a super hypo.

Sure, biologically it's a heterozygous hypomelanistic individual, but "het ___" has very specific connotations in the reptile world. A het is something that carries one set of genes, but doesn't visibly show it. You have het albinos and het anery, but not het hypos or het motleys for example. You have hypos, motleys, super hypos, and super motleys.

>>2404666
It's possible she will, being a female. Power feeding doesn't increase their potential size, though, it only affects the rate at which they reach those sizes. If you feed her appropriately, it will be a long time before she reaches 7'.

I fast them because their bodies are built for times of feast and famine, it can affect their long term health to be in a constant state of digestion, and several of my boas are going to be breeders and they will go off of food eventually anyways because of that. Might as well get them used to it.

I feed my adults every 4-6 weeks because feeding them any more often than that is overfeeding and can lead to obesity and liver failure. They have very slow metabolisms and hold onto extra calories extremely well. You can get a boa morbidly obese in the course of a few months, but it could take 3-4+ years to get them to shed that weight off again.

An albino BP should not cost that much. For the truly rare morphs, prices are dictated by the breeders who want to keep exclusivity on a particular bloodline for a while. The prices are based on breeders buying from other breeders jockeying over market share.

It's dumb but so it goes.

For just albino with no other genes and no hets, about $150-$200 regular price (less at expo). Other genes can ramp the price up a lot. Like I see albino pieds listed for over $1000 regularly. Hets will also raise the price, again because these really high prices are directed to people who will most likely breed the snek and sell the offspring as a competitor against the orginal breeder.

I really don't get this. I like this hobby because of the cool animals, but this is absolutely not about the animals anymore. Quite the opposite actually, the animals are suffering because they are treated like some sort of designer accessoire.

How did we let it get this far? It's not quite to the point of SMASHED AND SLAMMED BONEGIRTH yet, but it's heading there and it scares me.

Gives me conniptions.
>>
>>2405325
Could with a better pic. At a guess it might be a "scaleless head" (het. scaleless) with a few other genes mixed in which would make a great breeding animal for designer scaleless BPs.

Scaleless BPs lack ventral scales however so imo its unethical to breed them compared to scaleless rattles, Texan rats, emori rats and emori/corn hybrids.
>>
>>2405401

I agree it's stupid. You can do your part by simply not buying in to the designer morph ball python trade. So many other awesome species available that are just as, and I'd say more, suited to being pets.
>>
>>2405412
On the other hand I like to look at it as a domestication process. My only snakes were a trio of Taiwanese Beauties one of which was over 8ft long and they were really difficult to handle. I don't feel like wild animals have make the best pets and honestly if we turn ball pythons or corn snakes or whatever into a bastardised domesticated version as a dog is to a wolf then I think that'd be okay. However, since we're breeding mostly for colour variations rather than temperament I can't see it happening any time soon.
>>
>>2405401
>I like this hobby because of the cool animals, but this is absolutely not about the animals anymore. Quite the opposite actually, the animals are suffering because they are treated like some sort of designer accessoire.
That's the pet trade in general, herps just lagged behind a bit.

I'm mostly into inverts because I don't have a lot of room but I went to an expo recently and this one dude showed me some absolutely tiny dwarf day geckos. Some Lygodactylus species? If you've got experience with parameter management and can supply them with small enough food I don't see why not. Though for a first day gecko In that tank I'd personally would recommend a small Phelsuma species like Phelsuma laticauda.
>>
>>2405425
Crested geckos are the easiest reptile by far unless you live in a hot country or can't access commercial "crested gecko diet" since they need neither heat, UVB or much livefood. They are nocturnal however so they don't do anything in the day unless you handle them a lot and get them tame.

I'm mostly into inverts too but reptiles are much more personable. My personal favourite day geckos are Peacocks and Gold-Dusts but there are a lot of very similar species and a terrarium that size would fit any day gecko fairly comfortably, a pair of smaller species even if you felt daring. Long-tailed grass lizards (Takydromus), other dwarf geckos (Lygodactylus), anoles, green snakes (Opheodrys) and a whole host of other small tropical, arboreal reptiles would fill the same environmental niche as a day gecko so they're worth looking into as alternatives.

That's assuming the terrarium is 28" tall mostly though it would apply to width too. However, if the terrarium is 28" wide then it would also open up the opportunity to keep larger terrestrial lizards (leopard geckos, basically any skink or small agama etc.) or mouse-eating snakes like a hognose, male cornsnake and so many others. Depends what you want and how much you wanna spend setting it up.

If you're willing to put the effort in to vitamin-dust crickets, maintain humidity, provide UVB and a heatspot, have separate night-time heating, give alternate sugar-based foods etc. then it'd be great for any day gecko.
>>
>>2405444
Probably. Something with yellow spots.

I have plenty of small food, Drosophila, baby roaches and so on.

Also that tank is actually big enough for small Phelsuma? I thought they needed more space. They're beautiful too, guess I'm gonna go inform myself about P. laticauda.

How many would you keep in there?

>>2405456
I have no problem supplying livefood, or UVB. That is basically no extra effort for me. And yes, the tank is 28" tall. About that night time heating though, how warm do they need it at night and how do you do it? I'm used to inverts wanting it colder at night and also not touching heatpads with a 10ft pole. Are they alright for geckos or are they equally hated in the herp community?
>>
>>2405472
Day geckos are very small (except Giants and Standing's) so they'd be totally comfortable in a tank that size.

A heat mat underneath the tank kept on 24/7 is my method for night-time heating. Doesn't get too hot, you'll need a thermostat for the heat lamp however.

P. laticauda is a commendable choice.
>>
>>2405113
I don't have a snake but my mom has threatened (sometimes jokingly, sometimes not) to kick me out if I bring one into the house (she's just really afraid of them)

>>
>>2405488

How expensive are the animals though? I'm in europe, so they're definitely available.

Also could I put a pair or trio in my terrarium or is it too small for that?

>P. laticauda is a commendable choice.

You do realize deformities like that can be caused by improper incubation, not just genetics, right?

>>2405401
Many morphs are healthy, though. Morphs in reptiles are not necessarily like breeds in dogs. Any health issues associated with a morph was not bred into them: it's present on the morph gene. No amount of inbreeding or outcrossing will ever change that. I actually don't know of any health issues in the reptile world that are caused by inbreeding. Though it certainly does happen it's not as widespread of an issue as some anons are making it out to be.

I'm seeing more breeders choosing to responsibly breed their reptiles. Which means they're refusing to breed morphs with health issues (like spider ball pythons, super cinnamons, etc.), and making sure bloodlines stay diverse.

Morphs are not some ethical dilemma like some reptile hipsters want to make it out to be, these are morphs already present in wild populations that show up in captivity because our breeding practices with them. They're not the result of people of breeding animals together over generations, they're the result of heritable traits.

>>2405418
Reptiles don't have the ability to be domesticated like a dog or cat. Breeding for temperament on purpose or not, the more generations into captivity you get with a species, the more docile they become on average.

The way so many species have been hybridized in captivity, much of our pet reptiles ARE similar to a dog or cat genetics-wise. They have such mixed origins they no longer quite genetically match their wild counterparts, though we cannot change their shape or behavior through breeding. Unless a pure line of a species has been maintained in captivity, most of the reptiles in captivity are useless genetically for wild populations, so they're inextricably linked to captivity.

You simply can not give a blanket statement like this.

Any sort of selective breeding necessarily restricts the number of available partners and thus genetic diversity. The more selective you get the smaller the available genepool becomes. The less animals a morph has been developed from the more likely it is there will be problems.

>>
>>2405611
Sure it does, but most of the issues you hear of in morphs is due to issues linked to that gene, not because of inbreeding. Inbreeding is not currently a big problem in the reptile community, most breeders are pretty good about genetic diversity in their animals.

If you're worried only worried about deformities and conditions caused by inbreeding, it's not morphs you're worried about. You're just making them a scapegoat. Breeding normals comes with just as much of a chance of inbreeding as morphs do. Breeding them for polymorphic traits, to keep pure localities, etc. also can lead to inbreeding.

Morphs can be outcrossed just as easily as a normal, especially if the morph is codom/incomplete. A genepool is not limited just because there are morphs, and morph genetic pools are not necessarily limited.

>inherently friendly sociable lizards snakes etc.
Doubtful.
Friendly domestic animals already have friendly social structure, we just found a way to make them accept us into it.
Reptile brains aren't capable of it to begin with so it's impossible. The best you can do is make them docile, which is something that breeders actually do.
