I've heard some people have this same silly worry that people pick on black cats for superstitious reasons, but I've never witnessed it.

My black cat is a pretty good guy, if not a bit stupid.

Around here we won't sell black cats on and before Halloween. There's also police that go out all night checking for animal abuse including towards black cats. It's generally very easy to spot people who will harm black cats. They are either very scared of the cat and refuse to touch it, or they don't want to get attached and want to get the cat and do the deed asap. The ear was clipped when he got fixed and vaccinated since he was an outdoor cat. The tail amputation and foot happened 7 months ago. I think he got hit by a car. :\

I didn't even need to fill out some of the required paperwork for him; although that had more to do with the fact that I had worked at the PetSmart hosting him for almost 2 years at that point so the organization knew and trusted me

Mostly, black cats are just unpopular because they can look a bit plain compared to cats with pretty markings, and it's the same story for black dogs. It's difficult to get a really appealing photo of them if you're not a professional photographer, so you're not going to get as many people phoning up asking if they can adopt the black featureless blob with eyes as you will for the fluffy calico cat. However, most shelters do apply some caution, especially around Halloween - it's not like the whole satanic panic thing is still going on, but a little extra caution doesn't hurt if someone shows up asking for a black cat and doesn't seem interested in actually engaging with the animals.

This is Phantom. Phantom is a very good but very hungry man and he walks around in the morning screaming until someone feeds him only to immediately pass out for most of the day.
He act's more like a dog soemetimes. I got him from a stray cat colony, so his ear is clipped from being fixed and thrown back to the colony, but his extra toes make up for it.
As for the abuse thing, I've done "witchcraft" related things as a free time hobby (tarot cards, crystals, candles, gardening, and tea...), it's fun, I'm not too ashamed of it. I've seen some nasty edgelords in online communities, so although Phantom is an inside cat, I keep extra close watch on him in October so no one hurts him. That would devistate me.
As for local practices, black cats are never sold in October.

Your vet is a fucking butcher. It should be a small V shaped nick at the base of the ear where the fur hides it but an examination still reveals it.

My town rushes strays inside shelters and to new homes around Halloween if they're black cats, I don't know the validity of their saying people literally hunt them on Halloween, but nibbas is crazy yo.

My parents adopted a black cat about a year ago, along with her grey brother. They're the kittens of a duo of black strays who lived in their garden. The strays and the other two kittens (also black) of the litter disappeared suddenly, and we think the neighbour or someone else might have something to do with it.
The black cat is pretty as heck. She somehow managed to get some angora genes, so she's a ball of fluffy soot with big green eyes. But because (we think) of said parent-and-most-other-siblings disappearance, she's a bit afraid of people. She loves other cats, though. My parents are slowly getting her to trust humans.

I don't think superstition has something to do with it. They live in the country and farmers tend to have... different views of the idea of pets. And their neighbour has an extremely dumb, barely tame dog.
But maybe they just got away for some reason... makes me a bit sad, because the father cat was a really cool cat, very charming and cuddly towards humans like tomcats tend to get. But my parents couldn't properly adopt him and get him inside, because he scared their other, older cats.

I think black cats look very beautiful. Photographs usually don't do them justice.

I miss mine. Arthur was a good boy with a little white patch the size of a penny under his chin. He used to kill raccoons that attempted to get at our chickens. Died of stomach cancer 5 years ago. Vet was shocked as he showed no signs of pain period, and no symptoms until about 6 months before. His brother died about 2 years after, but choose to run away as opposed to die in our house/be put down. We always kept ours inside during Halloween and had no trouble. Humane Societies around here don't sell black cats in September and October as a precaution.

I work at a place that runs a haunted house every year. It has about half a dozen feral cats hanging around at any time, most of whom are black. They're pretty smart so hide from customers, but if any did try some I'm pretty sure they'd be in trouble. All the people running the place really like cats and I know at least one guy would probably beat the crap out of a customer that actually hurt one. We have a punch testing machine, his arm has been proven.

Mine is a grey/black type thing, it looks black to me. Its a good cat but is very shy and scared

I've heard of it in Oklahoma, probably because there are some legit batshit crazy people living here. I have a friend who found her black cat shot in their 5 acre forest near the property line. They had several neighbors I'd consider "Jesus freaks", one of them probably did it. This was outside city limits, so firearm discharge is commonplace and not a reason to call police.

I've only met one black cat and he was very friendly. Wasn't uncommon for me to walk by his house in the afternoon and find he had a group of admiring high school girls all taking turns patting him.

Shes the most affectionate cat I ever met. The only time she's not walking between my feet is when she's laying on me. The shelter I got her from thanked me since they have a hard time rehoming black cats. I'm glad she's young, I want a lot of time together.

There might be some undue hatred toward black cats in particular but you're generally going to find more or significantly less regard for animal well-being among different cultures regardless of fur colour.

Assuming you work at a shelter; do you/your co-workers think for some reason that people who practice non-Christian religions or are involved with the occult are going to harm the cats? I happen to be Pagan, occasionally wear a pentagram necklace, and when I went to a shelter to adopt specifically a black cat (I grew up with one as a small child and had another in my teenage years and both of them were the friendliest, most loving cats) the lady helping with the adoption seemed to be extremely unnerved and suspicious of me. I ended up giving her my number and have texted her three different pictures of the now very spoiled and loved cat enjoying his new home over the past few months when she asked how the cat was doing.
