we really think the earth is gonna die because of us? How ignorant and egotistical man is. even if we drop all the nukes on the planet the only thing that will die is man. after a thousand years guess what? Life will pop back up on our little blue planet after the nuclear fallout. The earth survived worse than "global warming" and survived the primordial time of the universe being created. But don't worry some fucking plastic is gonna kill the earth. The only thing we are trying to save is not the earth but our ego and ourselves. the slogan should be, "SAVE MANKIND" and not save the earth. After our pathetic little race dies off like the dinosaurs the earth will still be here spinning around the sun. It's the circle of life. When we die another will replace it. Just means that we died due to our own stupidity and negligence.

>Just means that we died due to our own stupidity and negligence.

Well, we die anyways. The sense that this wet ball of stellar mud is special was our own to begin with. The mistake may be thinking the other animals are just here for the ride. It seems more likely that the truth is so are we.

I remind you that humanity is a concept invented by primates. Its the daydream apes awaken to and play out every day, then go back to sleep, certain that it took an especially smart ape to dream up such a concept.

it's just marketing dude

'saving the earth' is the sort of thing that is simultaneously simple, grand and as universally good, and thus gets more people involved.

If anybody talks about say, cleaning up the streets of detroit for the people of detroit, you're more likely to get a 'fuck off' in response.

>We can drive hundreds if not thousands of species to extinction with no regard for our actions whatsoever because uhhhh mother nature will make others in a few centuries lol

Take your meds.

protip: many species disappear because of humans

You don't speak for me, kid.

>You think man can destroy the planet? What intoxicating vanity! Let me tell you about our planet. Earth is four-and-a-half-billion-years-old. There’s been life on it for nearly that long, 3.8 billion years. Bacteria first; later the first multicellular life, then the first complex creatures in the sea, on the land. Then finally the great sweeping ages of animals, the amphibians, the dinosaurs, at last the mammals, each one enduring millions on millions of years, great dynasties of creatures rising, flourishing, dying away — all this against a background of continuous and violent upheaval. Mountain ranges thrust up, eroded away, cometary impacts, volcano eruptions, oceans rising and falling, whole continents moving, an endless, constant, violent change, colliding, buckling to make mountains over millions of years. Earth has survived everything in its time.

>It will certainly survive us. If all the nuclear weapons in the world went off at once and all the plants, all the animals died and the earth was sizzling hot for a hundred thousand years, life would survive, somewhere: under the soil, frozen in arctic ice. Sooner or later, when the planet was no longer inhospitable, life would spread again. The evolutionary process would begin again. Might take a few billion years for life to regain its present variety. Of course, it would be very different from what it is now, but the earth would survive our folly, only we would not. If the ozone layer gets thinner, ultraviolet radiation sears earth, so what? Ultraviolet radiation is good for life. It’s powerful energy. It promotes mutation, change. Many forms of life will thrive with more UV radiation. Many others will die out. You think this is the first time that’s happened? Think about oxygen. Necessary for life now, but oxygen is actually a metabolic poison, a corrosive glass, like fluorine.
>When oxygen was first produced as a waste product by certain plant cells some three billion years ago, it created a crisis for all other life on earth. Those plants were polluting the environment, exhaling a lethal gas. Earth eventually had an atmosphere incompatible with life. Nevertheless, life on earth took care of itself. In the thinking of the human being a hundred years is a long time. Hundred years ago we didn’t have cars, airplanes, computers or vaccines. It was a whole different world, but to the earth, a hundred years is nothing. A million years is nothing. This planet lives and breathes on a much vaster scale. We can’t imagine its slow and powerful rhythms, and we haven’t got the humility to try. We’ve been residents here for the blink of an eye. If we’re gone tomorrow, the earth will not miss us.

>hey man we might wipe out most of life as we know it, but millions of years after we are extinct different life will pop back up so it's ok we can do whatever we want
>>
I want it all to end. My love of animals is just a mask for my suffering.
>>

a few billion years is about all the sun has left before going red giant and evaporating the planet completely, so good luck with that.

Statistical probabilities aside, as far as we know so far, there isn't life anywhere but here on Earth. The fact that life can survive a disaster shouldn't even be considered a valid argument, we should be doing as much as realistically possible to preserve the species that wouldn't die had we never interfered with the ecosystem, instead of nearly mindlessly killing off life as unnecessary collateral damage in the name of the progress of society.
Note my carefully chosen words, I don't mean to preserve /every/ species, that's simply ludicrous.

We can't wipe out most life. We can wipe out most mammals, birds, reptilians, and maybe fish, specie-wise, but biomass wise or "amount of living organisms"-wise, we can't.

That's before taking into account that nuclear winter is turning out to be less probable than considered.
