Thinking of getting an older rottie as my first dog. Anyone know anything about the breed besides the obvious?

In two years time I plan to get a rottie too OP, but as a puppy and will be putting it in a schultzhund program.
From what I read about rotties, they're a VERY dominant dog breed, long line of working animals from Germany. Very loyal and powerful breed.
Not recommended for a first time owner. They require a lot of training.

I've been volunteering at the animal shelter to get used to general dog maintenance. I'm dealing with a variety of breeds, but just wanted any info from people that may have had one before.

I'm not opposed to training, I can seek out professional training too. I'm reading into the schultzhund program right now since you mentioned it. It's very cool

Preparation is rarely necessary for such decisions. Take actions then adapt to the consequences.

Just work under the assumption that the dog will bite people and you will be fine.

There's no legitimate reason a civilian should train any dog this way unless they intend to use that animal as a tool/weapon/guard and not as a companion. If you're getting it and training it that way as a companion animal exclusively then I hope it at least manages to maul one of your children or friends before you put it down.
