Hi /an/. I got my ratties last July from a breeder. When they were maybe three months old one started making an odd noise but I googled it and someone said it was normal. This past week the noise has gotten louder, which is worrying me. I looked it up, and found out it may be an upper respiratory infection. I'm really scared, I'm in an awful financial situation right now, I can't afford to bring her to a vet. If I really have to, I'll go donate plasma to afford the vet bills. I just don't know if the noise IS an upper respiratory issue.
Does anyone have experience with this? Is there anything I can do to try and cure it without going to a vet? Thank you :(
It probably is. can you record the noise? Did you check it on the rat health guide site?
If it is a clicking noise it is a serious infection.
I keep hearing small amounts of dark chocolate helps with respiratory difficulties in rats.
I forgot to ask, what bedding do you use? Pine shavings irritate rat lungs.

Most rats carry a bacteria called myoplasma, which is one of the main causes of respiratory infections in rats. It is notoriously difficult to treat, in fact in the vast majority of cases we give antibiotics to try and dampen the mycoplasma down.
Your best bet to battle myco is to keep her bedding as clean as possible, try and buy dust free-bedding and then go from there. However honestly you need to see a vet, as she could well need some antibiotics.

Thank you so much for the advice! Today I'll go get better bedding and I'll look for a vet.
