My 6 month dog has learned how to escape his collar during walks so I want to use the harness again. The problem is he bites anyone who tries to put it on and will be gnawing on my arm by the time I put it on. I want to stop him from biting without hitting him, what do?

I am guessing that the bite behavior has been reinforced at some point in it's life, most likely as a young pup. A lot of people don't realize that letting a puppy mouth you can result in issues later.
Whether or not that is the case though, start discouraging the behavior by completely ignoring the dog any time it does that. Before walking try to relieve the dog of energy by playing a lot, tug of war is good for this purpose. Basically just avoid situations where the dog wants to bite you, and make it focus on other behaviors when playing.

Not letting a puppy mouth you can also cause problems, e.g. no bite inhibition.

Not liking harnesses (and also muzzles) is understandable, because it puts limits on the dog. So, for the dog to accept those things, they have to be brought in as something positive.

I'm currently caring for a dog who has to wear a muzzle when outside. But he knows that getting the muzzle = going outside, so whenever I get the muzzle he get's all excited and tries to jump/dive into it. It wasn't me who taught him that, so I can't really give good advice how to get there, especially not when the thing already has a bad connotation...

Maybe try to associate the harness with food, keep it around while feeding or give treats when your dog keeps cool in its sight. As always, start simple and take small steps, reward success and avoid setbacks.

>Not letting a puppy mouth you can also cause problems

This is literal bullshit desu and it's people like you who fuckin allow for biting incidents to occur. There's differences between a puppy actually biting you and gnawing on a piece of your clothing or playing a bit of tug of war. Every household dog should be taught to NOT bite skin between 6-12 weeks. Simply softly pushing his lip over his teeth when he bites you the skin should do the trick. Also teach him that gnawing on pieces of fabric and toys is perfectly fine and can be a reward for being good.

There's no reason for a dog to bite you, it'll only give him a sense of dominance which he should never ever get. Dogs don't mind not being dominant. They just want clarity and prefer being safe and sound with their owners being the alphas.

We let all our dogs play bite us when they were puppies, but we made a loud noise and/or walked away when they bit too hard. We let them (and encouraged) bite toys very hard. We also taught them a very strong Leave It command.

Our dogs now know how to play gently, which parts of the body they can be more rough with (like they can mouth and pull on our hands as long as they don't pinch or apply too much pressure, but the face they can only sniff or lick), and when we bring out the toy they can really go at it.

They've also learned they can be a little rougher when playing with each other vs. us

Tl;DR

It just depends on how you want to go about it anon. Don't shun one way as being completely and utterly wrong.
