/an/ I need some serious advice.

Two days ago my older dog attacked my 8 month old puppy out of the blue. It wasn't that serious of a fight. He bit her repeatedly and chased her but there were no injuries. I saw it happen and she hadn't done anything but lay down near him (like she always does).

Since then he's been growling and lunges for her whenever he see's her. We've got him chained up at the moment. My puppy is so traumatized she's started peeing in the house and will yelp and scream if I try to make her go out, usually peeing herself in the process.

My family want to have the old dog put down since he is 12. They seem to think it's dementia that's caused his sudden aggression. The dogs were very close before the attack.

Really I just want to know what other anons would do in this situation. Is it worth having him PTS? I love that dog but this behaviour is dangerous. I don't think I can ever trust him around her again.
Also I'm so worried he has damaged my pup for life. How do I go about dealing with her phobia of our yard now? I haven't been able to get her outside for a walk. I have no idea how she'll respond to other dogs now, or if it's only our other dog she's terrified of.

It could indeed be dementia.

When I got married my wife brought with her a Cocker Spaniel who was about that same age. No problems or issues until one day he fucking snapped and mauled my hand as my wife was getting in bed and I kissed her goodnight.

I told my wife she's driving back to her parents in the morning with the dog. Dog had a few more violent biting episodes with her parents in the next couple weeks and they ended up having him put down.
Sure enough, he had some brain issues and was suffering from dementia...

Take older dog to the vet, if it's dementia, they might be able to do something and have some tips for your pup.

I've heard of dogs that get brain tumor at their old age; it messes up the parts of their brain that affect their behavior, and their personality takes a sudden aggressive turn. Or sometimes dogs might be experiencing joint pain in their old age, which can turn them cranky.

I think it's possible your dog has dementia, brain issues, or something else serious. I would take the dog to the vet and see if they can confirm whether there's something physically wrong with it, and what course of action they would recommend. I'd trust the vet's opinion on what to do, but I would be mentally prepared to put the dog to sleep on the same visit if that seems to be needed. The dog's had a decent lifespan so far. If keeping him around for a little more time means that you're gonna have to worry about bursts of unpredictable aggression for the rest of his life, that seems like a very stressful and risky option. It might sour all your happy memories of that dog, too.

Sorry about the younger dog's situation. I haven't had to rehabilitate dogs with serious fear issues and can't offer a lot of help there, but I hope someone else can.
