My cat did this at that age. He was by his food bowl. Accordianed, seized up, fell over and then eventually he gained control but he had a tough time walking for a few weeks. He lived for another year and some months after that.

Probably stroked out and called it quits.

17 is pretty good for a cat. The oldest cat I've had only lived to 15, and he had so many health problems that his last few months were miserable. All my other cats died of cancer or organ failure at around 12-13. Be grateful that your cats death was sudden and not drawn out from illness.
