How do I help this little guy now?

Make him use harden. He should evolve.

Make sure the pupa is in a safe and wide open container. If the butterfly hatches in too tight an area the wings might not unfurl properly and it could end up crippled. Don't plan to keep it in that jar is what I'm saying. Get something sizeable like those butterfly rearing net cages you see for school science projects for example.

Do you need to have the correct plant in the jar for a caterpillar to turn into a cocoon?

I know Monarchs only consume milkweed.

It's already stringing itself up in that picture.

It looks fat and well fed. I think it'll string itself up where ever it pleases once it feels ready regardless of the plant.

Actually, my dad brought me this after he said it stripped one of our curry leaf branches bare. So I placed a few petioles with it. It seemed to like it.

I got this zip bag. Got any suggestions how to convert it into a butterfly rearing cage?

That looks like a good mesh material. I'm not certain how you'd put one together from scratch as I'm not a handyman. You'd have a while to figure this out while the pupa develops. If all else fails, amazon sells similar school project terrariums for cheap.

It mainly needs surface it can climb up and then hang from so its wings can expand properly. A screen sided cage works great, you could also just tape some paper towels on the edges of something. lots of branches will help. Spray the chrysalis a tiny bit with water every few days if its dry inside.
