The Plant General - Stinky Stapelia Edition

Welcome to /plant/, the magical green place on this blue board. ITT: sleepy snoozy VFTs, smug N. edwardsiana owners and beautiful budding normie seedlings.

/Plant/ is for the discussion of plants (obviously). Horticulturists, hobbyists and botanists welcome! Questions about plants? Want to show off your two inch dick-I mean plant? Maybe you want to start growing something new and exciting? Well come on over to /plant/!

Introducing a new basic caresheet with every thread: Stapelia/Orbea edition:
>fairly standard succulent care, most commercial species are easy
>well-draining cacti/succulent soil
>light watering, keep it dry in winter
>direct sun to very light shade
>don't let it get too cold, minimum 10c
>wait until flowering occurs to hide the smell of any rotting corpses you may be hiding

I got myself a dozen of althaea officinalis (english name is marshmallow i guess ?) seeds and got them waiting for germination, wish me luck.
>>
>>2309043
It's really sad, Dionaea are set for the same fate as axolotls, extinct in the wild but surviving thanks to hobbyists. BTW mine are starting to wake up, except for these because I kept them wiith a shade cloth.
>>
Winter dormancy party is over. Brother confirmed my purpurea is starting to grow again. Good thing ssp. venosa isn't a heavy sleeper
>>
>>2309227
Unfortunately axolotls are no genetically pure remnants of the wild population. Scientists crossbred them with an albino neotenic tiger salamander to get the albino gene. Since crossing colormorphs was common practice there are almost no pure individuals left barring some being specifically maintained by conservation groups.

I guess a similar thing is happening with Dionaea and unusual looking cultivars but at least the mutations come from within the species.
>>
>>2309686
nice
dormancy will still last at least 2 months here
hope all survived, we have a really strong winter this year
>>
>>2309691
this, a better example of "extinct in the wild, surviving through the hobby" would be Simandoa conserfariam, a roach species
>>
>>2309691
Oh, I didn't lnow this, I thought it was a mutation that occurred in a captive individual and was spread throughout the population.

I think we'll always have wild fenotype dionaea at least.

No.
Post composition of the soil you bought.
Also pic of the plant and the care you gave it.

I think the brand was miracle gro?
Not sure but the bag just was labeled peat moss.
Not home but I mixed one part moss with one part perlite for soil. Plant is turning black at the base and the leaves are yellowed

New normie plant, a mini rose bush.

Another dionaea waking up already, Giant Rosetted in this occasion.

I have a 55 gallon fish tank that I've set up for growing, grow light and everything. I'm looking to fill it with some ferns but I don't know what type or a good place to purchase spores. I'm looking for something under 2 feet that would grow indoors in the mid Atlantic. Light isn't an issue I can adjust it to suit whatever it needs. Anyone have recommendations?
>>
I know very little about plants but would like to grow something from seed this year. I was hoping I could ask a few questions.

I am living in Japan until around August - is that enough time to get to see some results? A flower to smell or a vegetable to eat would be great.

Also I will be growing it/ them in hanging baskets. What is worth planting there?

My aloe vera has turned brown but it is still plump. I haven't watered it in a couple weeks but I am wondering if it is because of too much sun. I stuck my finger in and its dry all the way down so I gave it water and moved it out of the windowsill I had it in(because I realize it is a little drafty) Just wondering what caused it. Waiting on it to hopefully green up.

Mallorca. It's not that hot despite what brits and germans believe, lowland neps wouldn't survive here outside. But high/low hybrids seem to handle our winters pretty well with a little protection. Specially Rebecca Soper, that plant is extremely resilient.

Did a pretty terrible job of splitting and repotting these, a lot of the wee little leaves are buried and/or eating perlite right now, also I did a poor job of filling the peat moss back into the hole after putting the plant in it, hopefully the monsoon of water I poured on them solved some of those issues.
Tomorrow will tell.

Oh it fuckin' is hot. Anywhere that doesn't have winters routinely below-freezing is hellishly hot by my standards. Neps are equatorial tropical plants, just the idea of any surviving outside long-term is insane to me.

They look pretty well. Dionaea always do this "bending our leaves tho annoy you" thing when reppoted, so don't worry if you had to leave some under the substrate.

Those three are basically the triforce of common bulletproof hybrids, there are few other hybrids as mainstream ans mass-produced. You could also try 'Bloody Mary'/'Lady Luck', x hookeriana, 'Louisa', they're all quite common too. Any ventricosa, maxima or robcantleyi hybrids would also likely do well for you, they can really take a beating.
>>2314863
Blimey, I can only assume so
>>

Robcantleyi is pretty damn near unkillable too. Basically anything with Ventricosa is probably invicible, actually.

Thank you guys, I finally settled for a Aristolochioides x ventricosa. Ventricosa gives the plant strength and aristolochioides makes it not look like "nursery hybrid #67"

I tried Bloody Mary once, it survived but it almost died. Louisa too. Robcantleyi is impossible to get here atm. Hookeriana is the lowlest of lowlanders, it dies if temp goes under 15ºC for too long.

My friend also has Spatulata x gymnamphora for sale but it was more expensive and boring looking, though it seemed hardier.

I hope they recover soon and I can spam you with pics of them like I do with dionaea

Every winter I bring my Cryptanthuses into my room but every year, 2-3 of them just won't make it, because my whole house is like a desert. So I decided to make a terrarium for them, already got everything expect the light....Never used artificial light source before, but the only spot I can put that terrarium is way too dark for them. What kind of light source should I use? Fluorescent lights or maybe LED?

I got three more pics after this.

So about a year ago I was messing around outside and I aciddentally chopped into a root in the garden out front. I picked it up and was messing with it because it had a small green leaf sprouting from it, and I thought it looked interesting. So I was still holding it for a while just doing other stuff, and when I was done I tossed it into the old waterfountain outside. I didn't think much of it till I came across it a couple weeks ago, still growing.

It's since grown into this, having survived through the winter and completely submerged, and I was wandering if anyone could identify it for me.

It's a hardy little thing, and if I can, I would like to add it to a small aquarium.

Do you absolutely have to make an amaryllis go dormant? Mine doesn't seem to want to. When I was first given it, it flowered with two stalks, then the leaves eventually yellowed and it went dormant. When I brought it back the next year it only grew leaves. It kept growing leaves for a year and a half at least, maybe even 2 years. Then recently it started growing way more leaves, and today I noticed an actual flower popping up. I'm wondering why it didn't go dormant. I also thought they only flowered after being dormant...but I'm still really happy. If it doesn't go dormant in the next few months should I just force it? Or will it die back on its own now that it's finally flowering after so long? If it doesn't is that really a bad thing? Can't find any information on this online

That should be plenty of time. Quick vegetables are radishes, chard, and peppers, easy to grow and fun to take care of. Herbs like basil and cilantro can grow within that time too. I've never grown in growing baskets before, but you still have plenty of time to see results.

Like Venus Flytraps, dormancy for 'Amaryllis' (I'm going to bet it's actually Hippeastrum sp., of the family Amaryllidaceae) results - generally - in better growth but it's not impossible for it to just bloom after a period of growth. It will naturally go dormant, but you can help it out by slowly reducing water, temperature, light intensity and fertilizer input

I've done this twice. In water it grows really well. Then when I put it in soil, their growth slows, and they eventually yellow and die. Tell me your results please!
Also, I read that you can't just keep them in water alone, Because of the lack of any nutrients, so you'd need to plant it in soil or give it some nutrients in the water like hydroponics.

Nice. I read somewhere you have to plant it in the soil only when it gets roots again, otherwise it'll die out. so we're keeping an eye on it and see how it does in water. It seems to be doing really well though.

Depends on the plant.
For flytraps I usually go on forums, but I have also used Flytraps.nl, carnivorasland, carniplant (carniplant mostly because it's here and I can just drive there and buy some odd-looking typical), Christian Klein when I made big orders with more people and araflora for weird cultivars. Also I bought from flytrapstore once, a culture tissue tube of WIP Long snapper.

My sarracenia are mostly common shit from local nurseries and their hybrids that I've been growing over the years

Nepenthes: carniplant usually. The guy has a great variety, from ventrata to rajah.

>Sundews and pinguicula: they are presents. Or come with other plants. I don't really care about them, but they are here.

Cephs: since I only grow typicals, I buy them from the place that has the cheapest ones.

Drosophyllum luscitanicum: they gave me ten seeds, only one has grown.

THE CONCH HAS SPOKEN!
>>
Alright /plant/, question time.
I need a whole lot of dirt, and for reasons hard to explain there's basically nothing living within 100 miles of my house.
I want a plant that I can grow indoors, under my growlights, that won't need much nutrients, that grow fast, and can survive being cut, like grass.
I wanna grow them, cut the tops off, compost the cuttings, and the next day cut again.
Sadly I don't have any dirt to grow it in, but I do have nutrient solution.
The other thought is just breed flies to compost, but they still need to eat.

most of you guys only like these plants because they "eat" animals so its easier to relate to you. This entire meme is anthropocentric as fuck and you are talking about being normie.
Im not saying they are uninteresting but not enough to have this entire threat masturbating about only sarracenias nepenthes and dionaeas.
Its embarrassing how much of this diverse kingdom you are able to cut out and how you happen to show interest only in plants that are popular.

I think it's because only nepenthes fags and me post in these threads anyway. Maybe we are more passionate/autistic, who knows. I hope we don't make anybody feel unwelcome here.
Btw I liked flytraps since I was a small kid, and I've been growing them for 6 years now. I just like their trap mechanism, how it resembles a mouth. It's not that I bangwagoned in some kind of fad, I honestly like them and feel bad because they're being poached from their habitat.

And that being said, I received this guy today.

No need to throw a hissy fit and invent narratives to explain the explosion in carnivore popularity. I rarely even eat meat, and I only jokingly anthropomorphise my plants if they're dioecious. I grow a few native trees, shitloads of orchids and assorted ferns/bryophytes too but they're simply not as showy (or reliably so) as Nepenthes. Just because that's mainly what I post, it doesn't entirely reflect my own interests.
>>2328125
Contribute your own interesting plants or discuss shit and this loose carnivorous monopoly will easily open up, honest.

All kinds of things. I'm growing cacti, Strawberries, and bananas in nine. Just order some seeds and plant them in suitable soil. Or if you don't know what to pick, just leave a pot with soil in it outside and things will start to grow in it and pick what you like best.

I've got venus fly traps, watermelons, strawberries, and sprouts. I just want something more than rock and clay outside so I can grow stuff out there as well.
10KW of growlight per square meter sure makes shit grow fast, but it's not exactly pretty to look at.
Anyway, 7 tons of tree just landed on my roof from my neighbour, so I'm trying to work out a way to turn that into dirt now.
>>
>>2328341
Also yes. Grow them up nice and strong anon, because nothing much is worse than having them all slowly die.
>>
>>2328460
Well I artfully cropped out the one miscarried seed that came out sideways. RIP
>>
>>2328456
Actually I did have an idea for you. You should grow clover. Lots of farmers grow clover before their crops and then they bury the clover and it makes the soil healthier. Bees also love it, if that's your thing. Clover seeds are also cheap and plentiful online.

Does anyone know if I'm supposed to top this or not? Have had it for a year or so, started out as a tiny thing from a market stall from a friend. It's grown those shoots in segments, each with a leaf that dies off, and it seems to flower every few months? It's an indoors plant. What do?
