What advice would you give a lifelong cat person, potential future dog owner?
Also, how to deal with puppy fever?
Just get a dog. You'll quickly become a dog person, trust me.

Dogs depend much more on their owners than a cat. Cat is like a friendly roommate, dog is like a child forever.

Absolutely this.

Listen to this anon. If you get a dog, be prepared for separation anxiety that you wouldn't otherwise get from a cat.

Who would willingly keep a child for 10-15 years?

like you're jonesing to get a puppy, or your puppy has a fever?

for puppy fevers, the most important thing to do if you can't get to a vet right away is hydration. if you can't get them to drink properly, flavor their water with a little chicken broth, see if they'll lick ice cubes, or squirt some unflavored pedialyte in their mouths with a syringe. dip their paws in cool (not cold) water too. then get it to the vet.

my advice would be exercise and not to use puppy pads. dogs will need a lot more interaction and exercise than cats.

until they're about a year old, puppies' exercise requirements are 5 minutes for every month old they are, twice a day. so a 4 month old would need 20 minutes of exercise in a period, a 1 year old would need an hour. this solves 90% of behavioral problems. a tired (not exhausted) dog is a good dog.

and the puppy pads thing is just 1) a pain in the ass to train them out of and 2) a sign you're a lazy owner. you're basically training the puppy to think it's okay to go to the bathroom indoors, then when the time comes to potty train it outside, you're confusing him by telling him it's no longer okay.

obviously it's different for senior dogs or very ill dogs who can't make it outside but otherwise it's the worst advice anyone could give.
