He's a basset hound/german shepherd mix afaik. Basically just a chunky GSD on lil legs. People point and laugh when we go on walks. Poor guy thinks they're laughing at him, not with him.
Is Raja shaved or just shorthaired?

That's adorable and sad. You can really see his little legs on the picture.

She's a short hair, it also didn't help that she had a really bad allergy reaction that caused her to start losing her fur when she was a puppy so it never grew in as well as her siblings fur.

Bit off topic, but I've got a question about dog psychology. Basically I was wondering about if dogs have a much wider "uncanny valley." Because mine freaks out over halloween masks. Really, any kind of mask. Ranging from a blank white one to the dishonored collector's edition mask.
>>
>>2305914
I think it has to do with the unfamiliar rather than uncanny valley, mine freaks out at bags, boxes, or any other kind of large object he's not used to seeing people hold.

That said, I always wonder if dogs seem like grotesque, deformed abominations to wolves.

I have this really weird cognitive dissonance going on at the moment where I look at GSDs and they seem small. I mean, I look at this dog and know that it is logically 80lbs and too large for me to even pick up, but I still think "little." Anything smaller is "tiny, breakable."

Looks like a cute pitbull to be, anon. Great looking doggo. Here's my pitbull, Brutus. Similar looking apart from the coat.

Incidentally, my neighbor has a German Shepherd and he leaves outside all the time. Is that okay? I've seen the dog get walked once in like two years, and the only toy she seems to have to play with is a 2x4 block of wood. I always feel super guilty when I look out the window and she's just lying in the snow, and then I look on the couch and Brutus is sleeping on the couch with her head on a pillow.

She sticks her tongue out whenever she's just sitting around. Why do she do this?
>>
>>2307779
She wants a kiss.
>>
>>2307789
I kiss her all the time on her big fat cheeks! She puts her widdle nose on people now, I think she thinks it's the same thing. She's sitting next to me snoring away right now :3

It's just funny when she does that because she's not panting or breathing heavy, it's when she's kinda tired but doesn't want to go to bed she'll just sit really close to me and stick out her tongue just a tiny bit.

I'm sorry, she's so cute I can't stand it.
>>
>>2307779
Because it's a relaxed positioning for the muscles involved. Like most mammals, dogs tongues are bigger than their mouth. Couple that with the fact that dogs breathe more through their mouths to keep cool and it's easy see why a bit of the tongue sticks out.

I mean, my first dog was a GSD. Neither of my parents had ever really owned dogs, so they weren't really any help.

It turned out okay.

But, like, you have to do all the research. Research lines and breeders and medical conditions the GSD is prone to and medical conditions large dogs in general are prone to and research the shit out of training because GSDs need to be trained or you'll have a bite waiting to happen on your hands and you'll need to spend some time looking into canine nutrition, correct puppy socialisation, and correct puppy exercise too.

And if you aren't in a stable financial situation, I'd say look at a healthier breed, or at least a smaller one, because it costs so much more to anaesthetise a big dog than it does a little one, and for little dogs you have to give much smaller doses of medication, and all of that cost adds up.

But, eh. I love mine. He's getting old though. Taught me so much.

Could anyone suggest me a breed? 1st time posting on /an/, I have a quick question and need your expert opinion.

My colleague's dog had to be euthanized today (tumor). She was sobbing part of the day after she had the call with the veterinary. The family dog was eleven years old and they also have a little kid.

tldr. Would it be considered tasteless if I gave a card or some chocolates to her and her family as support of her grief?

How should people near you react to your pet's loss?

>>
>>2308837
In situations like that, I just wanted my loved ones to understand and console me when I felt sad. If your colleague wishes to talk about the dog with you, hear her out. Be understanding and patient; don't say anything that sounds like "but it was just a dog".

I have never thought of giving a card/chocolates after loss of a pet, and I haven't had that done to me either. I don't think it sounds tasteless, but it sounds unusual and a little excessive to me. In my experience, just talking and crying with a close friend was what mattered the most.

However, I don't think giving your colleague something is an entirely bad idea. If she seemed really distraught, maybe she would actually appreciate some kind of little gift. She'll probably continue feeling sad for a while before she can move on and think about the dog without breaking into tears. It could be nice to show her that you took notice of her grief and wished to cheer her up.

>I have never thought of giving a card/chocolates after loss of a pet,

That's the reason my sister thought it would be a bad idea: giving thém a box of chocolates could be misinterpreted as "Congratulations, your mutt is dead!" And I personally think that flowers is way too much.

Googling around I found out that many people give away a condolence letter, what shouldn't be seen as tacky or excessive. I'll look around in some serious petshop tommorrow and ask them if they have some advice.

Thanks.

I don't think it would be tasteless, it sounds like a nice gesture to show you are sympathetic and hope to cheer her up a little.

When my ferret died, one of the vets that treated her sent us a card that said "good friends touch our hearts forever." I broke down crying when I saw that, it really meant a lot to me. I actually framed it and put it up on my wall with my ferret's paw print to remind me of her.

So I think a similar sort of gesture would be appreciated, just to show you are thinking of her/her family and their loss, and show support. Of course, lend a kind ear if she wants to talk, too. Be compassionate and just listen. Losing a pet can be a really intense heartbreak and it can take a long time for someone to be "ok" again, so to have someone just be there for her is invaluable.

Thanks for the replies! It was a good idea to leave this thread open in my comp (you are some slow board, huh?)

After much thought and asking in some bookstores, I decided to buy them a children's book dealing with the passing of a dear house pet. Can't remember the title now (should be ready to be picked up on friday), but it's similar to pic related.

Like said in my first post, they have a little kid, no older than 6 years old. I'm a bit foreign to this whole "death of a loved one" topic, but the first thing my heart told me is that a child would need the most support on these moments. I don't want them to force the kid into a chair and read the book out loud, but it could maybe be a nice idea to cope together as a family by making the younger one understand what's all about.

I hope this won't end in some weird faux-de-pass. But you know where "good intentions" can misunderstandingly lead to...

It's true that it's helpful to help the kid understand. And I think a little book like that was a good choice, because in helping the kid, you also help the parents because part of their grief, I'm sure, is seeing their kid so sad and confused by the whole thing.

That said, having experienced loss of a pet as a child and as an adult, in my personal experience...it hit me much harder as an adult--having responsibility for that animal, raising and caring for it myself and loving it...and then losing it, and having a better understanding of the concept of death as an adult....all that made it hit so much deeper and it was so much harder to deal with.

I think the book is a good choice, though. I'm sure your coworker will appreciate it, and knowing that you're thinking of them and are there to support them is really valuable.
