I think it's two things that worked out together, human brains growing capable of empathy and wolf brains seeking out easier life for survival.

These stories are easy to imagine. You caught and butchered that big thing and decided to wait until small ones became bigger. Eventually there was that one that was protective towards humans and it was too obviously useful even for a brain of those people. You keep seeing some of them following your camps, as a hunter that is able to caught some of them alive you are maybe able to weaponize them too.

The moment old humans became capable of feeling protective towards each others children? All primitive religions were basically "be thankful towards animal you ate". Now this is the material of studies and not for idle googling stories, I have nothing to contribute.

And the fact that they are opportunistic carnivores. Omnivore can do fine without socialization and pack behavior, obligatory carnivore has nothing to offer to poor primitive men. These old protodogs had just perfect stomachs to survive along side humans.
