I know little about horses. If I had a horse walking at a normal speed or running at a sustainable speed, how far could I get in about twelve hours?

depends on if the oats were some good shit

Horses are like people. They come in all different sizes, proportions, and fitness levels. A stout fat horse isn't going to go as fast, as far, for as long, as a tall horse who gets regularly exercised and has a high energy level. Also endurance varies from breed to breed.
This is just not an question that can be answered definitively or with any accuracy.

can any horses go for 12 hours straight period?

It's hard enough to drive a fucking car for 12 hours straight.

Even someone who isn't /fit/ can do that. Walking and driving are totally different things. I get tired of driving 20 minutes in but a 12 hour walk is nothing.

That's from endurance riding, which is going to be pretty close to the maximum possible, given that times are only counted if the horse finishes the race still healthy and not about to collapse from exhaustion.

So about 6.5 miles per hour is sustainable for a very fit, properly conditioned horse of a suitable breed, ridden by a knowledgeable rider, but this would be considerably less for the majority of horses. Galloping is definitely not sustainable, though films often show horses galloping through the night - horses are prone to overheating and quickly exhaust themselves when they run, so steady walking and trotting is the way forward in endurance riding.

OP here. Thanks.

So, already answered this, but I'm gonna burst into the thread again because I forgot to mention that the record for running 100 miles on foot is actually considerably faster than covering it on horseback (under 12 hours). While there's mandatory vet checks to pass which prevent running horses into the ground over long distance races, horses are reasonably good at walking long distances, but they're not great distance runners and minor lameness and injury can quickly escalate where a human could continue running. So, it might be of interest to you that if you had 1000 horse riders and 1000 runners of equal fitness levels setting off in one direction for twelve hours, the humans might well cover more ground on average.
