Good question, why aren't there any insects as big as wolves and other predators? What doesn't work about insects that stops them from being efficient at a larger size?

Common sense, if the exoskeleton is big enough to cover a lets say 2-3m insect, it would be so heavy.

Insects don't have lungs, they have spiracles and rely on diffusion to absorb and move oxygen through their bodies. this limits their size as if they got too big, oxygen would not be able to be properly internally distributed.

As >>2280237 said, the higher the concentration of O2, the larger the insect as it becomes easier to absorb and distribute.


Also, they don't have muscles like we do, instead they use a kind of hydraulic system. It's very powerful but I'm not sure it would scale well.

Their method of breathing. Arthropods, such as insects, tend to have very primaries lungs that aren't too efficient at getting oxygen.

This is why insects were so huge several million years ago, there was a lot more oxygen in our atmosphere than there is today, so even their inefficient lungs could get a more than ample supply. This allowed them to shuffle off any size restrictions and get as big as housecats and larger.
