I guess rat general is here again
>>
>>2275158
We'll yeah

There's no point in having 2 threads or calling it rat general when small mammalia questions can be asked there anyway
>>
I prefer the small mammal general. Even though I own rats, I still enjoy discussing/learning about other small mammals.

I hope to open a small mammal rescue one day. So many people give up Guinea pigs, hamsters, etc or neglect them.
>>
My rabbit won't clean himself. I've been losing the battle of keeping his bum clean. His behavior otherwise is fine. I think his diet is to blame. He barely eats hay or greens, I think he just doesn't like the taste of the greens. The hay he likes at first, but when he's eaten as much as he wants, he pulls the rest of it down from the manger and pisses/shits all over it.

Is there a safe/healthy way to sweeten his leaf veggies so that he'll take more than two bites? Also, a way to make him less stupid about his hay?
>>
How much do rats usually eat? I'm really surprised at how much food my two rats eat. They're old so they mostly eat baby food and they can go through a couple jars a day.
>>
>>2275168
That'd certainly be cool. Small mammals and I guess small animals in general are poorly addressed in the rescue field

>>2275177
Just don't give him any other options so he'll have to eat hay. Or go see a vet

>>2275371
>they go through a couple of jars a day
Jesus. How big of a jar are we talking here?
>>
>>2275533

I work at a PetSmart so I am constantly seeing aggressive hamsters that no one wants, or albinos. I never realized how much the general public hates albino animals. Or fears more than hates I guess. People are always calling asking if we can take Guinea pigs or rabbits that they no longer want to keep. I don't know how many times my coworkers have sent me ads for rats that need a home. Once we get done building our house (maybe sometime 2017) I'll be able to start. I'm stocking up on cages while I wait. We accidentally got a large CateFresh Guinea pig cage (retail $100) but simply because we didn't have a spot on the shelf for it, my boss sold it on clearance for $25. I waited a few days but ended up buying it.

From what I remember, baby food jars aren't that big (2-4oz). What type of baby food is it? If you are just giving fruit and veggie baby food, you need to include protein in there somewhere.

I work at a pet store too, and people definitely don't like animals with red eyes, that's for sure

I like them the most though (pic related is my golden boy)

Good on you, though. Sucks that people are stupid and irresponsible though. I know all about that shit as well, lol
>>
>>2275585
I can understand the aggressive hamsters not getting adopted, no one wants to get their kid an animal that's gonna bite like crazy. The albino shit is just stupid though and I hate that people will get super unhealthy and needy furless rodents over one with red eyes.

My wife used to hate red eyed rodents until our momma mouse birthed the sweetest little PEW and now she doesn't mind them.

He looks like a fluffy snowball! So cute. Is that a Russian or winter white? One if my rats has pink eyes. She was there for a while before I got my cage and everything ready for rats. She is by far, the sweetest and cuddliest (which is saying a lot for a female rat) of my quartet.

>>2275726
I understand people not wanting to buy a hamster they can't hold, but that's why I want to "rescue" them. I have come across many that were aggressive, but with time, would allow you to at least pet them. I know if I had them at home, I could get them to come around a lot quicker. Russians are the hardest to tame I think. Syrians can be intimidating once you know how bad their bite is.

Pic is a Syrian that came in with severe wet tail (along with 3 other hamsters). We got baytril from the vet and she made full recovery and became so sweet. The other 3 made a full recovery as well, but for some reason she stuck out for me.
>>
>>2275177
Firstly, cut off/trim the hair around his fluffy butt as much as you can. This should help a lot depending on how fluffy your bunny is. (Preferably after you've already cleaned the area)

Secondly, I think you will have better luck trying different types of hay and veggies for him. I'm not sure what you're trying to give him but there's timothy, alfalfa, meadow, orchard, oat, and just plain old dry grass. If he still won't eat any of these try giving him fresh grass.
As for veggies most green things you can try giving him.
Bok choy, broccoli, carrot tops (the green part), dandelions, various lettuces (no icebrg or light hearts), kale, basil, asparagus.. Check google for more detailed list. There are fruits good/ok for bunnies as well if he keeps refusing veggies.

All else fails you might try a diet supplement in his water or pill form or that you mix into his food, there's a number of types of things.
>>
>>2275371
>>2275585

Is right, make sure the jars you are giving them have enough of the assorted nutrients they need. They may be overeating because they're lacking some key part of their diet.

He was sold to me by a guy who breeds for pet stores as a Winter White, but I'm confused as to what that even means any more, dwarf hamster subspecies classification only gets more confusing the more I look into it.

Like sometimes I hear that WWs and Campbell's are the same, and, like, Russian hamsters are both of them but yet they're different? And one of them is a Djungarian, or something to that effect, but like what does that mean? Which one's a Djungarian, why even throw that word into the mix? I've heard that Russian is a catch-all term for dwarves (save the Chinese) and yet I've also heard that Russian is a specific type...???

And who's to say what my guy is? The dude I bought him from is super old and who knows if my ham isn't just an albino Campbell's? Like he is a white hamster, sure, but he's also albino, so I assume that not all WWs are albino.

The only reason I even care is because I was looking into breeding him to my female, just as a way to get into animal breeding, which is something I'd like to do bigger-time in the future. I wouldn't care too much if he was to be solely a pet and nothing else, I just love his looks and temperament.

Anybody have any idea how to rationalize my identity crisis here?
>>
>>2275840
Not that anon, but is it common practice to trim a fluffy bunny? Do they need to be groomed like fluffy dogs?

I don't have a rabbit, I just never thought about one having to be trimmed.

, djungarian are winter whites though, but I'm basing this off of multiple sources with some calling them Campbell's but a majority saying they're winter whites.

Side question is my djungarian here just fat or is she pregnant?
>>
>>2275842
I still offer them rat kibble but they don't eat it as much. I guess it's easier for them to eat soft stuff. My vet gave me nutrical so they get that too.
>>
>>2275894
Try adding a small bit of protein to it or mixing the baby food with softened rat kibble.
>>
>>2275872
From what I understand, WWs are a variation of Russian dwarf. WWs have rounder eyes and turn white during the winter. I have never heard of Djungarian hamsters, but after looking at some images, they look like Russians AND WW. After being around them so long, I can tell the differences between Russians and WWs, or at least I like to think I can. The fact that he's albino makes it harder. I want to say WW since Russians tend to have more slanted eyes.

Sorry if it's not much help. It can get confusing. Now I have to look into this
Djungarian Hamster...

So
>Djungarian=WW=Russian
And
>Campbell's=Russian

Is that right? Like I said, this only matters because I plan on breeding them. The hamster in pic related was sold to me as a Russian, and at the time, I was under the assumption that a Russian was the same as a WW

I don't know about your guinea pigs, but my hamster was brown when I got him. I was fooling around with a ouija board once and put him on it, and then black lightning struck him and now he looks like that. Apart from his looks and a few other things, he's still mainly the same as before.

I actually find it pretty easy to ignore the faint demonic whispers coming from his cage and the inexplicable amounts of blood that appear in his water bottle some nights. He also ceaselessly runs in the shape of a pentagram whenever I let him out.

The only negative consequence is that one time I looked him directly in the eyes and started waking up in a cold sweat, covered in locusts. Avoid that and you're golden, though

They live about 5 to 7 years, sometimes a lot longer. They are susceptible to canine distemper, rabies, and the human influenza virus. Ferrets from a breeder other than Marshall ferrets live a lot longer because they aren't inbred, so they're less likely to get cancer or another genetic disorder.

It's probably a simple infection. It can get really bad if left untreated and pops up fast. I'd take her to the vet and get some eye drops. If you can't take her immediately, try and wipe the eye with some chamomile tea. .

It can also be symptom of a tumor or cyst pushing behind the eye.

My rabbit is notably chatty.
I am scared though that I have done something to make it hate or fear me since it is almost too chatty. Here are two recordings of the sound it makes when I approach it on the floor and it runs to meet me for cuddles:

http://vocaroo.com/i/s1XrIFZAl0qX
http://vocaroo.com/i/s014kVHlqusA

It's the whimpering noises, sorry for the carpet scraping (I was sliding my phone on the floor).

It also makes similar noises when I try to touch it in the cage, or when giving it a treat (except it is more of a "laughter", being rapid and frenetic), or even when cornering her (which is why I think it might be her being scared).

Any ideas on if this is normal?

Have any of you dealt with abscesses/cysts yourself before?

My two year old male rat suddenly had a lump that appeared on his lower stomach, he didn't seem bothered by it and after some days the lump started smelling foul and turning a dark colour(indicating it was a skin problem and not a tumor) yesterday he'd gnawed some of the dead skin off himself, leaving a small hole where I could see the puss, so I decided to clean it. He was mostly still and didn't seem like he was a in pain, I put a warm towel on it and squeezed the puss out + pulled out a small white stinky lump with tweezers before rinsing it with water and putting some healing cream around the wound.

A day has passed and he's been cleaning it himself and otherwise acting normal, the area isn't red or infected. Should I just leave it?

I've had it happen to a few of my rats. The one went from normal belly, to having a grape size lump, to having a grape size hole, to being completely healed in under two weeks. Just keep it clean with a q-tip and it should be fine.

Neosporin will work but only if the abcess is burst or opened. If the abcess doesn't burst and is causing your rat discomfort I'd suggest taking it to a vet. They'll drain it for you and give you a good antibacterial cream to.
>>2283042
That sucks, what about rabbits or ferrets? Mice are smart to, not as much as rat's but still smart for a rodent.
>>
>>2283114
I was thinking about ferrets at this point, although they're master escape artists. In middle school, a buddy of mine's ferret friends would find their way into the walls and subsequently the sewage. I'll have to do some research
>>
Big rats forcing smaller rats on their backs and making them squeal is normal, right? As long as no actual harm is being done, I don't need to separate them?
>>
>>2282973
>>2283114
Cool. I'll dab it with neosporin. Thanks for the advice!
>>
>>2283210
Yes that's normal and healthy rat behavior. As long as they aren't drawing blood or seriously trying to injure each other. It can get pretty loud, but they usually squeal to show the dominant rat they give up, not because they're in pain.

Hey /an/

So this morning I found this tiny little house mouse trapped in my dogs water bowl. It's in a little cardboard box for now with some shredded paper, an old sock, water, and some food (peanut butter and dry dog food)

Humane society doesn't open for another 3 hours, so is there anything I should do in the mean time? Little things warm and drying itself off atm.
>>
>>2283118
I'd like a ferret. They're so sweet, but it's the same responsibility as having a dog, not like a couple of rats or mice. Too much time and space needed.
>>
>>2283286
Not really, just put some traps down for the other mice that are in the house.
>>
>>2283357
I have four cats and this is the first mouse I've seen in 6 years. I think I'm good. Thanks though.

I've have both Aspen, Carefresh, and Yesterday News. Used Aspen and rats began to have excessive snifflings, wheezing, and congestion. The Aspen didn't help with the smell after a couple days and would smell very strong. Carefresh absorbed urine but had similar problems with Aspen. Other hardwood pellet beedings had tannins that further gave my rats problems. The 100% paper bedding had a strong ammonia smell. Now I have yesterday news and hear that there is a percentage of softwood pulp in it. Does every beddings for rats have problems? Also, people have always been using YN and haven't reported and problems. Don't know what to do. Rats are on it now and they're not having any issues. When on Aspen they immediately sneeze.
>>
>>2283668
Make sure when you buy YN that it's the unscented. The new carefresh formula is shit. Aspen is okay and mainly a budget bedding. Do you have a picture of the cage?
>>
>>2283694
Got my cage second hand, but it looks like this. Yeah, I purchased the unscented YN.

It will ease up once they work out their social hierarchy. You only need to intervene if you see blood/hear shrieks (not loud squeaks). Another sign of fighting you need to stop is attempts to bite the rear or flanks.

Don't stop them with your bare hand, it's one of the only ways to get bitten by a non-traumatized rat

Just picked up 3 female rats. they're all pretty young, but one is 5 months older then the rest and half trained already. I just have some questions.

I have a multi tiered cage for them, but only the oldest is exploring, is this something they'll do more of as they grow? I have one that I picked because she's pretty high energy, sadly she doesn't like to be held longer then a few seconds. she doesn't bug out and squeal, but she starts sprinting. is this something I can warm her up to? I know they all have unique personalities, and on top of that my voice makes most small animals jumpy.

so far I'm pleased. though two of them just huddle together in their new cage, they are more energetic when being held or placed off the ground floor, so I know they're healthy. and the breeder they came from has 4 lines at any time, 2 for pets(selected for temperament) and 2 lines for feeders(basically the rejects) this assures me that I don't have somebodies inbred accidents.
>>
>>2281551
I'll change the name to that unless someone else makes the new one. And the sound of a taser is a good way to describe the scream.
>>
>>2282731
Male or female?

It is harder to introduce new females.
>>
>>2284396
It might take a day or 2 to adjust to the new cage.

Males are usually more cuddly than females. Don't expect young females to be cuddly when they are comfortable. The only reason my youngest lets me cuddle her is when she is scared. She's new, so sudden noises still scare her. But when she's not, she's busy running around with the other girls, only stopping by to check if I have food.
>>
>>2284396
It can take some days for them to feel safe and go explore the new cage, max a week. Young rats are rarely very cuddly, they're way too curious to just sit still on your lap, so they'll crawl all over you and try to get on the floor.

Once they get older, they tend to slow down and some become very affectionate. Different rats like different things though. I had one who loved to be scratched under his chin and behind the ears, but another who didn't care for that and only responded favorably when I scratched his lower back. Others never learn to like it.

>>2284537
>>2284569

thanks guys, that helps. I have another question. one of the younger ones is pretty sleepy, she eat's, but I can't say I've seen her drink. she doesn't really move around a lot, just stays in the nest the other two built around her. she's active when held, but a sleepy little weirdo when in her cage. is this normal?

>>
>>2284726
Like >>2285047 describes, they often sleep a lot during the day, but after some time they'll turn their clock around and be more awake when you are, because that's when they know good stuff (food, playtime out of the cage etc) happens.

Rats favorite passtime is being lazy with each other on a pile. As long as she drinks and eats it should be fine.

new /an/ fag.

I bought a bunny like 2 months ago. Me and my fiancee improvised a fold for her since our room is split in two and our bunny has the smaller part. After a month or so she started to build a nest , ripping her hair off her chest and getting all the hay she had into the nest. Yesterday she did that again , do female bunnies think that they're pregnant? Is it a maternal instinct to do this? We have no other bunnies in the house.
>>
>>2285623
Bunnies will nest no matter what. Ripping her hair out sounds like a nervous tick though and you should get her a friend. Provide some nesting material to, it can be pretty much anything. We use old t-shirts we cut up for our animals.
>>
>>2285778
I'm spending the most of my free time with her , should I really consider getting her a friend? Another female maybe? (I don't want my apartment to be a bunny house)

Also , she is running around my legs and grunting...what does this mean?
>>
>>2285781
Yes, unless there's someone there 24/7 a bunny should have a friend. Obviously in your situation I would recommend a female. The running around you means it wants to fuck, play, or whatever is in your hands

DESU either yesterday's news or aspen. Maybe carefresh if it's not too dusty for your hog or gets stuck in its quills. Fleece isn't exactly that expensive if you're holding off because of costs.

Fleece blankets at Walmart cost about 2.50 a piece, and then I use binder clips to prevent burrowing and have a potty pad underneath to keep clean. I just keep a small bin of carefresh for them to grab whatever bedding they want for their igloo (as I noticed this behavior) or use it as a litter box. I have two hedghogs, each one does it differently.

It also makes it easier to do fleece if you have some sort of "litter box", in my experience it works best under or near the wheel as that's the activity they tend to poop the most with
>>
>>2285803
But what if the bunnies won't get along and they will fight? I mean , mine is playful and plays with everything ( especially toilet paper tubes filled with hay ) and also she's not making so much noise and mess.

The only thing that stops me from buying another bunny is that she won't get along with it.

If it's a very furry one , as mine , cut his bum hair a little. Also , she rips her chest and bum hair when she's "in the mood".

Try another type of hay. I have 3 different packs of hay , each with a different flavor. She loves the raspberry ones the most , you should give it a shot , your bunny might like it.

Also , I'd like to know how old is your bunny and if you fed him packaged rabbit food. My bunny eats only packaged food and carrots , she doesn't like greens. I think it depends from individual to individual.

How in gods name do you keep their rats from chewing up the fleece? Mine have ruined so much of it. It's hard to keep up. Entire blankets are rendered unusable after 4 cage cleanings.
>>
>>2287295
I just let them since they enjoy it, I cycle the ruined ones as potty fleece for their litter box (I place stones on top of it)
>>
>>2287295
>Protip: you dont

just use the same blanket over and over again. i had an old stinky wool blanket where i put mine while cleaning. after my fellas bit the dust i tried to wash it a couple times, then threw it away because the smell never got out.

rats also need a ton of stuff to chew on. i gave mine the cardboard boxes from all kinds of packaging, they loved it. jus throw them away after they are soaked with rat piss and start stinking.

but they fought

im also a little allergic

hopefully allergies gone
if not too bad
ill keep him outside of my room instead of always in
>>
>>2287407
>should I get a friend
It'll be happier, but with males it's hard to house them together. I've gotten lucky and got a super submissive mouse, with a fairly mellow alpha. If you fear your mouse might be fairly aggressive get two more males and house them in a neutral territory for 24 hours, let fights happen unless there's blood.
>>
>>2287407
I wouldn't. Male mice are pretty aggressive. They can be housed with african soft furred rats, though. I've known a lot of people who keep female ASF's with male mice. You can also neuter him. Rodents are generally much happier and have much better lives with friends, but male mice will kill eachother most of the time, especially the inbred pet store mice.
>>
>>2287333
The blankets are too chewed to use. I can't even drape them over the pans anymore. The holes are giant, so the piss and shit just ends up puddled on the plastic even after i've layered 4 blankets on top of eachother. Doesn't smell too good. They also have wood chew toys and tons of cardboard boxes right now, they're just cunts about the fleece. It does smell fine after getting washed with baking soda and some bleach, though.
>>2287326
I guess i'm gonna have to recycle. I'm sure they'd appreciate some fluffy stuff in their hideaways. Do the stones make them any more inclined to piss in the box?
>>
What is a good cage for keeping a rabbit indoors? I've searched and looked at a couple online but I'd like to hear some personal experiences. I'm only at work about 16-24 hours a week so the rabbit would have plenty of time outside their cage.

On a different but related note, did Kaytee change the formula for their clean and cozy bedding? I've noticed that now it's more like shredded toilet paper than strips of paper towels.
>>
>>2287537
As long as the rabbit doesn't poop everywhere and doesn't chew every wire in your house as mine does , I think it's safe to let him out.

A good cage for a rabbit depends if the rabbit is an adult or just a junior. I wanted to buy one for my rabbit ( Hexagonal form with a hole up top for inserting more food ) but I didn't like the idea of giving her such a small space.

Its starting to piss me off case if she escapes I have a rat terrier waiting to end it then and there. I give her 3 hours of out time every single day. She also has a cage mate with her.

hey guys, I'm a new rat owner. I'm concerned about one of my rats. I have a pretty dust free bedding. any help would be appreciated.

Nice. I really like the concept with those mini-stairs for the bunny to learn to jump.

I got a pair of rats from a breeder a while back and it seems like they weren't properly hand-raised, because while they don't bite or anything they're definitely very skittish and do not trust me at all. I know the old tried-and-true method is to feed them treats, but they're so scared of me they won't take anything I give them. I try not to pick them up too often, but I have to do so at least once a week to move them to their travel cage while I change their litter. Anyone have any tips or know of a good guide for trust training out there? What's the best way to get them used to me enough that they'll start accepting food from me?
>>

>>2287986
Maybe she's getting used to your home?
Either way I had the same experience and it was myco, i watched if she improved for 3 days and once she started sneezing in fits (like 3 or 4 times continuously several times a day) is when I decided that it was clearly not just stress and took her to the vet.
>>
>>2288053
Alright, actually they just accepted a few Yogies from me. They're still kinda scared, chilling in their igloo, but this is a milestone.

>>
>>2288058
she doesn't sneeze in fits, and she's been in her new home for over a week. we're monitoring her closely and will take her to the vet if it seems to worsen. but I just want some kind of red flag. I did listen to her breathing, her little heart kind of overrides it, but there was no rasp or wrong sounds from what i could hear(I know what an unhealthy respiratory system sounds like, I'm an asthmatic that's prone to bronchitis)
>>
>>2288053
Shit nigga I played with my rat's every day, even the shy ones. If they start freaking out bad I'll put them away, but I still hold them everyday until that point. The more you take your rat's out the quicker they'll adjust.
>>
>>2288069
Your bunny will be happy. Buy the bun a tube that should be easy to clean and stuff it with hay and hide treats in it. That should keep your bunny busy for good hours and they like it.
>>
>>2288053
A rat breeder, or somebody who bred rats? There's a difference.
Generally, when I get new rats I try to start out very slow and work my way up. If they really won't even take food from you, you need to start back from square one. I'll preface this with the fact that patience is really the only thing that can help you here. If you're not patient, none of this will work. The process of warming rats up to you takes two days for some rats and months for others. If you rush this, it'll fuck a lot of rats up. I have some rats who I rushed to socialize and I've been working for months to undo the damage I did.
>find something that you can do for a long time and just sit by the cage with a hand sitting in there without forcing them to come and keep doing this for at least a few days or until they're comfortable enough to come investigate you
>find treats they really, really like and they can't just grab and run with (oatmeal, baby food, etc on a spoon)
>if necessary, withhold food from them so they'll actually be hungry and they should be more willing to come to you
>once they're comfortable coming to you for food and staying there, you can start trying to lure them into walking out onto your hands, arms, or into your lap

Don't force scared rats to be near you; all you're doing is giving them reasons to distrust you and showing them that being with humans isn't good or fun. While interacting with and holding your rats every day is great, it's not great if every day reinforces that people = fear. If you have to pick them up, make it a positive experience and give them treats while or after being held.
>>
>>2288245
This was someone who was selling rats on Craigslist and had lots of positive feedback on her Facebook page. She warned me that she hadn't spent as much time with this litter as she would have liked, and it shows. They're very shy and while they just started taking treats from me by snatching them from their igloo door, they're not warming up to me as fast as any other rats I've had in the past.

I've got their cage open sitting next to me on my bed right now, trying to get them used to my presence. They don't seem overly scared but they're just chilling in their igloo.
>>
>>2288256
What's their cage setup like? If they've got a small cage or nothing much to do, it might make them more reclusive because they've got no real reason to come out. Not super likely, but it could definitely be a contributing factor.
Honestly, any decent rattery should have good enough breeding stock that their rats aren't horrendously skittish just because they weren't socialized as much. Unless they were literally never handled, but it doesn't sound like that's the case. I've also never seen any respectable rattery selling them on craigslist. Most of my rats are craigslist rescues or feeders, so I can't say much, but i'd really suggest finding a much better breeder. If you're willing to go the extra mile to get them from a breeder in the first place, you might as well find a good one.

It's not super-huge but it is fairly large, and while I'd like to get a bigger one someday it's just not in the cards right now. They have a big plastic igloo, a few of those bird cage ropes so they have something to climb on, and I provide clean nesting material (tissues and such) every time I change their cage, but I guess I should give them more stuff to do? Maybe a chewable tunnel or something. Also, one is readily accepting treats from me even outside of the igloo, so I'm sure it's just a matter of time with her, but the other one is usually too scared of me to do anything but freeze when I get close. Any way I can endear her to me?

>>2288911
Got them about a month ago, so... 3 months maybe? Probably not 4 but possibly.
>>
>>2289545
That's a big enough cage, but the more you can give them to do the better regardless. I'm pretty sure setup isn't an issue in this case, but they'd appreciate it. If you have females, you can buy a solid plastic wheel (at least 12") and they might like it. Males are lazy cunts and won't run for shit, but some females are nuts about wheels.
There's no real way you can lure them in besides patience and good food. If you take their food away, trust me, they'll get hungry enough to come to you. Also, again, try getting some baby food or something that you can have on a spoon to prevent them from just grabbing it and running off.
>>
>>2289551
Will do. Guess I just have to be patient with the dumbo.
>>
>>2289545
that's the same cage I have for my 3 rats. I got kinda lucky and managed to fit a couple shelves from my old cage into it so they have a bit more space to lay around on. I also took the door off the top and set the top of another smaller cage on top of it and secured it to the big cage with ring binders. added a hammock and some pads on top of the other cage for them to walk on and they ended up with a nice attic

Would it be bad to get only one rat or only one ferret?
I'm home almost all the time (part time job) and my s/o is home 24/7 so socializing isn't an issue for us.
I just know they're fairly social and figured if one of us is home constantly to be with it and handle it that it probably wouldn't need a parter?
Or is that a stupid thought process
>>
>>2287907

>>
>>2290320
A rat will always need a partner. No matter how much time you spend with them, you still won't be there 24/7 to cuddle up, groom and wrestle with them like a cagemate will. It's not harder or more time-consuming to care for 2 rats.
>>
>>2289538
Update on this. It seems like something is wrong with his pelvic bone or lower back, he drags both his hind legs, can still use them, but only barely, and he won't stand up like usual. He was running around and jumping two days ago.

Anyone had any experience with something like that? Could he have bruised or broken it from a fall?

I guess my rabbit who's 3 years old did that too. She proabably stopped being chatty before she was 1 and a 1/2 years old. I don't know how I made her stop it. I moved houses in those 3 years three times already and the second home my roomates had large dogs so I moved again. And like I dunno. My bunny is relaxed around me, runs up to me for food except for picking her up she'll run around and hate getting picked up.

Me again.

Since I'm putting my hamsters in a tank, a suction cup water bottle is necessary. Unfortunately the only one I can find is on Amazon for $18 and it only holds 2.4oz.
Help?

Does anyone know where I can get larger ones, or perhaps know how to do a DIY?
>>
>>2290320
Just get two of either. It really doesn't make caring for them much harder and it infinitely improves their quality of life. Plenty of people will tell you that their animal is "just fine" and "very happy" alone, but you'll also find people who chain their dogs outside in the winter and keep their betta in bowls saying this about their pets. Also, for rats, I'd consider getting 3. 2 is just fine, of course, but I don't like having less than 3 rats at any time because they're so short lived and they get pretty bummed when their life buddy drops dead. They're so inexpensive to care for that you'd barely notice.

They do it in response to not having a dark cage. If they're accustomed to sleeping under bright lights (like if they were in a pet store cage with light bulbs 3 feet away) then they pick it up as a habit.

I'm sure there are some who do it for no reason, though.

One of my rats has red around on of her eyes. I suspected it might be blood, but judging by the photos, it might be porphirine (Can't hold her still enough and make a photo at the same time).

Should I be worried? She scratched herself until she got blood on her neck this summer, no other rat before or after had anything resembling bleeding with me.

inspect the fur, it could have mites. even if kept inside, mites can be brought inside by insects.

>>2291688
I check on my rats regularly and I didn't see anything unusual in her fur. Are mites even visible to naked eye? Last time I used some anti-parasite drops anyway but to this day I don't know if it changed anything.

She also doesn't seem to scratch herself more often or aggressively next time, no blood or bald spots.

The only 'positive' is that he now wants to cuddle, but that's kind of sad too, because I know it's due to not being able to run off and explore.

How quickly does cancer tend to take out rats?

We got a ~2 year old male rat with bumblefoot and a tumor the size of a golf ball in at work about 6 weeks ago. The vet decided surgery would be too much to put him through, so I took him home as a hospice instead since the alternative was immediate euthanasia.

Since then the tumor has grown to about the size of a baseball and hangs quite neatly off his side. It greatly hinders his mobility, but doesn't actually seem to cause him trouble otherwise even if I poke around at it. He loves cuddling and bruxes more than any rat I've ever had. However, his appetite seems to be decreasing recently and I think his main non-tumor body has been losing weight. I guess I'm just not sure how long I should let him go before I take him in to be euthanized. My intent was never to save him, just to give him some good time in the short span he had left, since in his last home he'd been neglected.
>>
>>2293479
My only rat who had develop a tumour so far was insanely resilient. I believe it took her a year to die and she remained active for almost all the time. Her tumour grew to be almost the size of the rest of her body, but she remained active until very end and I wonder how much was it just through inability to carry the weight of tumour around anymore. I wanted to put her down at this point, especially since her hind leg got some kind of sore or even maybe necrosis, but she dies on her own.
>>
>>2293487
Huh, good to know. I think this guy might turn out to be a similar case, perhaps since he was fortunate enough to develop a tumor that wasn't attached to anything important. It really just hangs off his side like a weird little sideways preggo belly.

He's all curled up in my lap and dozing as I type this. I really hope he sticks around a while longer. I know it's anthropomorphization, but he always seems so grateful for any attention or food he receives... I'd like to give him some more good time before he goes.

/an/ I need your help

My rat just ingested a small amount of naxopren, I snatched the pill away as soon as I heard her. She managed to nibble a bit off from it and at the moment she's exploring and hanging around.

>>
>>2295353
Give her some food, bread or crackers or something. NSAIDs aren't good to take on an empty stomach. As an added bonus, it'll encourage her to drink more and flush the shit out of her system.

Other than that, not much you can do. Good luck.
>>
>>2295353
Rats are pretty resistant to poisons, if she didn't eat too much she hopefully should be fine. As the other anon said, give her some solid food, make sure she's hydrated, and keep an eye on her.

One of my rats had the winning combination of dairy and medicine, she had serious poops and was miserable for a few days. Just make sure she's not in distress and hopefully it will pass out of her system very soon, they have a very fast metabolism.

So I went to the pet store a bit more than a week ago to order in a couple of cambells dwarf hamsters. They said the order would come in Wednesday and then hold onto the hamsters for 3-4 days.
>wait a couple days to make sure they got them

>can pick them up on Weds
"I was told 3-4 days, not 5?"
>"it's to make sure they're healthy"
>wait until today (Tuesday) to call them and double check that they're ready to go

Thank you , bf and I took her to the vet earlier today and it was clear they didn't treat "exotics" far too late, they gave her an injection under the skin to rehydrate her, one of the options they kept pushing was to open her leg to inject her there instead of under the skin but there was a much greater risk of breaking some bones and doing internal damage (they told me it's usually the method they give to cats and dogs, which was what the technician was used to treat)

We gave them the tablet she nibbled on and they told us she had ingested from a 8th to a 10th of the tablet and the animal poison helpline has told her it was more than enough to cause GI bleeding.

Since she is much smaller than an average rat which would further complicate the procedure so we chose medications rather than the invasive method (plus they could not even draw blood because they did not have the proper equipment for it and her size was not helping). They gave me some stuff for the eventual ulcers and more charcoal that I already gave her earlier today. She's been resting since.

I've heard of stories of how rats are so resilient, I hope she will be ok.

Anyway I'll keep posting the follow up in case it happens to someone else in the future, naproxen will fuck up your pets stomach and liver.

What can I do about a mouse with a respiratory issue? I got this nice little male angora mouse, but he sneezes a lot and you can hear him rasping just a little bit if I hold him by my ear.

He's in a giant tote cage, but the cage is littered with holes I drilled, and there's a fan by itn so there's plenty of ventilation. The two females he's with don't seem to have anything wrong with them.

I feel like his issue developed when I had him on hold at the pet store I work at, we keep the mice in 10gal tanks if they're in the back room. I had him on hold for bout 2 weeks fter he came in, because I wanted him but was getting my wisdom teeth pulled and I needed to get the cage set up. I've had him for a week tomorrow.

Needless to say, what exactly can I do to help the little guy get better.

I see wet tail in young Syrians more than any other small animal. It can take anywhere from 4 days to 2 weeks to get rid of the wet tail, on the shorter end of we have Baytril.

Okay this is the stuff immediately available to me, fish amoxicillin. They're dissolvable tablets, could I ration them out and use them for mice? I've heard that people use these tablets for their dogs (the fish ones specifically), and the label doesn't say that there's anything else in there other than amoxicillin.

It's all the same stuff, right?
>>
>>2296230
It's the same stuff, the only difference between it and the human stuff is purity standards. You need to dissolve a small amount in juice. This allows you to dose better as he'll take the whole treatment And allows control.
The dosing for rat's is .10cc per pound for 10-14 days. It should be similar for a mouse. Hope that helps.

Just took my hedgehog to the vet today for the first time. She's almost 2 years old and has had an otherwise healthy life up until recently. She's been scratching like a fiend and flaking a lot which made me guess mites but when I looked for them I never saw any. What prompted the vet visit though is she recently was having some blood in her urine, which I at first thought was poop because it was rusty brown in color and she has this tendency to wipe her butt on the paper towels when she finishes doing her business, so I thought it must be her just buttwiping at work. Come to find out she has mites, might have uterine cancer, and slightly infected ears. I feel terrible as her owner/caretaker for not getting her checked sooner. :( The good news is it's all treatable so this next month is going to be carting her back and forth between home and the vet making sure she's in tip top shape.

Love this little grumpy spikeball.

She's also overly pudgey, so diet here we come.

I had the same with my rat and it's fine now. Either recovered on her own or she had parasites after all and I actually killed them with that drop of medicine.

I hope your rat will be fine.

I've never had a mouse before (only hamsters) but they seem pretty happy, especially now that they have each other. They like to cuddle a lot and dig around in the bedding.

The one from the streets has lived with us his whole life (found him with eyes closed) so it's not so much a wild mouse.

The other was being chased around by cats for God-knows-how-long, so it's super friendly and actually seems grateful.

If you want a mouse and have some running around your house, it's better to catch/cage em than murder em for sure. Catching a real wild adult one in fields or something, i wouldn't do.

You really, REALLY need to get them a bigger cage. Especially for wild mice. And a bigger wheel; six inches minimum.

Enjoy your hantavirus

My female mice attract wild males that fucking piss everywhere and squeak at them all the time. Thanks to that my room is now laced with snap traps
>>
>>2298557
I had females for years and no mice got into my house. Sounds like you just have a shitty house or you're really bad at getting rid of mice.
>>
>>2298577
Old farmhouse, probably is pretty shitty as far as being airtight is concerned.

I got two males in one night like a week after I got them, and then another identical male under my dresser like 2 weeks ago.

I don't have anything against wild mice, but I really don't like them in my fucking room or pissing everywhere, or giving my mice diseases.

This Edgar, my talking mouse. He just chitters when being held, never had a mouse do that before. I wanna breed him but he's super submissive so I'm n not sure how it'll go for him.

I want to get a 10 gallon tank and keep 3 mice in it. Should I get males or females. Obviously if I got males I'd get from the same litter and bought at the same time. I just don't know if their sex matters. I kept gerbils as a grade schooler and the males I had were way better than the females I had.

too small even for a single one
>>
>>2299551
My bad, I went off of the human society's info and some mouse keeping website.
How much space do they need?
>>
>>2299552
Mice are very active. 100 cm x 50 cm x 60 cm would be a good size to aim for when keeping 3-4. also, tanks have shit ventilation, cages are better.
>>
>>2299552
I'd go with wire cages; they're easier to clean, less expensive, and much funner for the mice. I would suggest getting a cage (or attaching multiple cages together) that is around 3 square feet. When I had mice, a group of three females, I found that they'd start chewing on the bars if I took some of their cages away and left them with much less space than that. Mice are very active and really enjoy having lots of things to do and places to go.
Sounds like you need to do a LOT more research if you're even considering housing males together, let alone in a ten gal. thefunmouse is a good website, i'd suggest you visit it.
>>
>>2299559
Nevermind, I think I'm retarded. Definitely not 3 by 3 feet for mice, though i'm sure they wouldn't mind. Whatever the hell three cages that are 1 square foot each is, that's how much I'd suggest for them.
>>
>>2299559
Not him but I've had one set of males housed together for 7 months now and another set going on their second Together. One set are brothers that have never been seperated and the other set are from different litters. It is do able, just a bit more work.

Okay so amoxicillin guy from earlier here, I finally got the stuff. I popped open the pills and divided the medicine up into rationed doses.

However, the mouse will not fucking eat any of it. I tried putting some in peanut butter, I tried putting some on his nose, I even tried placing it directly into his mouth via peanut butter, but none of it worked.

So ultimately, I just put it the mouses' water supply. If nothing else, at least he drinks water fairly frequently. Will administering the amoxicillin this way be effective for a slight respiratory infection? If so, how often will I have to replace the water and put in new medicine? Is it a daily thing or will the amoxicillin stay potent for a few days?

I've got a serious question anons, idk the point of getting a hamster if it only lives an average 1-2 years. I mean, the longest living hamster on record lived for about 4.5 years.

It's like the rodent equivalent of owning a Beta. Solitary, boring, simple.
Actually worse as you can put a Beta in a large tank with other fish.
>>
>>2299609
Mix a dose with juice and let them drink it all down, and do it multiple times a day. The water method is fine but you'll need to change it daily and hope you didn't put to much in. It's. 10cc or .10 ml per pound and you mix it with about 4ml of juice. The sweeter the better.
>>
>>2299703
Even worse as bettas can be tought tricks and bond with their owners quickly.

Can say that again! So smart and full of determination. Recently taught Virginia to jump to my shoulder.

Sometimes she has fits where start scratching ears. I've looked while was sleeping didnt see irritation debris or anything.

Also should use any gel or food additives for hairball treatment?
>>
>>2299726
Okay well the amoxicillin is in a powder form, how to I measure that dosage accurately?
>>
>>2299839
Weight it, or just use a small amount. Maybe the size of a rice grain.

Aww. Yo-yo (the white ferret I posted) likes to ride on our shoulder. She's really good at it too!

As for scratching fits, some ferrets are just itchy. Two of mine occasionally will spring up from sleep, furiously scratch themselves, then get right back into bed to sleep. If there doesn't seem to be irritation but you're still worried, you could ask a vet but in all likelihood she's just an itchy ferret.

For hairball prevention, you can feed some oil to supplement their diet. Animal-based oils are best for them, I would avoid plant-based oils. Salmon oil is a really common one to find (most pet stores will carry it marketed for cats,) it's good for them and most ferrets seem to like the taste. I personally use emu oil instead just because I don't like the fishy smell of salmon or other fish oils. They really like it as a treat so it's easy to give.
