Tell me about cat breeds. I know all about dogs. I love dogs. I can tell a purebred 90% of the time, and can usually name out a mixed breed with like 69% accuracy.
So I was pretty sure there were like, three breeds of house cats. Calico, Tabby, and Maine Coon. I only know the third because I had one as a kid.
So yeah, /an/, lay your shit on me about cat breeds. I don't hate cats, I like cats, but I don't know shit about em. Educate me.
for starters tabby and calico arent breeds, they fur colour patterns.

Got it
Cat breeds generally are too young to be able to tell them apart using genetic tests. Rare and unusual coat patterns may pop up out of anything. Point coloration ("Siamese") is a good example of that. Some of the coat patterns are female-exclusive.

So there's no genotypes specific to a certain group? And they're not "old enough" to identify breeds? I really interested, because i hear we've been domesticating dogs for less than 10,000 years. Is our cat domestication so far behind?
Again,sorry, I'm really drink

Cat domestication happened on its own.
Dog domestication was intentional.
Cat breeds need to be pedigreed or they're just cats with a certain coat and traits.

Not only shorter domestication history. Not even the fact that cat breeding is mainly XIX-XX thing. The sheer number of traits and their respective genes besides coat related ones which describe a dog breed. It's like three letter long password vs 15 letters long. Yeah some cats are mainly mean or nice, but it's not the same as, say, to breed a bear hunting dog with specific jaw structure, short smooth hair, strong limbs, build-in stubbornness, but who are also fine with work in group, etc Well, cats are small and hard to re-purpose, and they hunt vermin automatically, nobody wanted more from them until really recently.

Our cats have been domestic for a long time, but breeds were not needed. Cats were just all cats. We didn't end up breeding one cat that is better at climbing or one better for killing rats.
Even now that cat breeds are becoming more popular, they all still hold the same purpose - to be companions. So they don't vary as much as dogs do.
If you want to learn about cat breeds I'd first suggest looking into their genetics and breed standards. More goes into cat breeds than color, as I'm sure you know with dogs.

Not really related to cats, but we've had dogs for at least 30,000 years, possibly 40,000
