Are there any herbs or otc medicines to give a rat who has respiratory problems? Anything to help them breathe better? The rat is already on antibiotics already.
Hi, I bought a nebuliser for my rat who had respiratory problems, it saved her life on a few occasions. I used it with water to clear her Airways then nebulised the antibiotics and steroids that she was on. It only cost about £90 maybe $150? Total lifesaver.
Ps, it was a human one, I just rigged up a little tank to put her in and the pipe pumped into the tank. A specialist in rats helped me. Good luck, hope your baby is ok.

Dang that's pretty cool

Yip, I ended up using it with a few of my rats over a couple of years, love yours BTW
It's also important to check possible causes. e.g. where in the room is the cage , what sort of bedding do you use. that could help prevent future respiratory problems

I use puppy pads on bottom floor and fleece on the second floor. Their cage is on my bedroom floor at the moment, it's a wire Martin's cage. I open the window nightly to let fresh cool air in.
They eat cereal, oats, seeds, eggs, nuts in the shell, milkbones, vegetables, berries, etc. Lots of human food. Baby food with b complex mixed in a few times a week. They're on doxycycline twice a day and it worked well up until recently.
One rat is almost 4, the other is almost 3. The oldest has a case of mites and I'm bathing her regularly but they won't go away.

Mites usually need a long treatment time, you can wash and treat them daily for 3 weeks but it might not work. Try getting revolution for them, it's the best and easiest treatment for mites. After that is ivermectin which is also good but very difficult as each ivermectin medicine requires different dosing sizes and even then they're incredibly small doses. The ivermectin I bought was for horses and you need a dose the size of one short rice grain.
