Hey /an/, I'm having a hard time identifying what this fruit is. Does anyone know what this is?
I believe this is the same kind of fruit
2 different friends sent these to me, the one that sent the second one said it was really hard
I believe it's some kind of nut, actually. I've seen them fallen from trees here but I'm not sure what they are called, sorry

thanks a lot, now I have some stuff to read about! :D
Osage Orange or bois d'arc. They are really cool trees, wish I had one here.

Maclura pomifera. recently read a book about how it and a bunch of other (mostly North American) plants/fruit were adapted to be eaten by the now extinct megafauna and have yet to adapt to their loss, mostly surviving through smaller animals sometimes working right, vegetative reproduction, happenstance, or (re)introduced horses and cattle.

>Ghosts of Evolution
I expected much of this book, sadly it was very watered down and repetitive
We call them hedge apples in Indiana.
Used to play with them during recess in grade school. We called them monkey brains.

Osage Orange, cut down a huge one yesterday.
It's drying in my barn now, preliminary inspection seems to be pretty great.
Protip: the smell they emit can act as a natural mouse repellent.

that's just a meme.

Can confirm.
Fence posts were commonly made from the trees. I know if you load your wood stove down with that yellow shit you stand a good chance of burning your house down as well.

Yeah the wood is very hard and crackles like fireworks when you burn it.

Osage. Is really good for keeping insects out of the house. Not sure how or why. Just know that my mom and grandma would always get 1 or 2 during the summer
