Here's the thing: I don't feed my dog, I barely spend my day at home (other people are here though, it's not he's going to die from negligence so shut up), I'm not the one who changes his water, etc. Everything that's absolutely necessary for him to live, I'm not the one who does it.
Why does he love me? He's literally sleeping on my lap right now.

Thats probably why, dogs can be affectionate with complete strangers after all, so if they actually know you it doesnt matter what you do for them theyll still love you
everyone in a dog's "family" will have a different role for the dog. one may be the feeder, another may be the walker, etc. op, you're the cuddler. obviously the roles can overlap and 1 person can fulfill multiple roles.
