What sort of care does a German Shepherd need through his life

Good socialization and obedience for sure. Get her into a puppy school. Two birds, one stone.

She is going to need a bunch of exercise as well as mental stimulation. Look into doing dog sports with her. Perhaps Schulzhund?

No different from any other breed

About the same as any breed, but I've noticed one thing: be wary of how smart they are. They figure out stuff quick. Had food on a table and my 2 month old moved a ramp over to get up to it.

Socialise the hell out of him. GSD's are really bad for attacking other dogs. Tons of training as well, you want a friendly obedient dog.

as others have said. socialization is huge. I live a pretty reclusive life and make a point to both bring my dog to work every day and let her freely visit with my neighbors and their dogs. I also set up some puppy 'playdates' when I can with friends and family.

You have a big dog breed. Don't be afraid to lay down the law when you need to. A shithead teacup dog isn't much of a big deal... you can always just tie them to some helium balloons and let them go be shitheads in the sky, but a shithead giant dog can really cause some serious trouble for everyone.
