I'm getting a golden pup soon but I work 8-10 hours a day. I'd feel bad keeping him crated that long and don't want him to develop any anxiety issues. I have two other housemates who could let him out, but i usually beat them home as i leave earlier in the morning. Outside of work I don't have much going on so I will have plenty of time to spend with him. Is doggy day care worth it, or will he not be too damaged from being crated during workdays?

Yes.

Yes, this will end well.
>>
Why not directly giving it to the next shelter? Saves you a lot of time.
>>

>>2251175
right, but is there any way around that
>>
>>2251178
Yes, not fucking get a dog when your life does not allow one at the moment.

>hurr only NEETs can effectively raise a pet don't bother if you have a job!
A vast majority of pet owners have full time jobs and leave their dogs alone. I just want to make sure I'm doing as much as possible to have a good outcome
>>
>>2251179
When would I ever not have a job? I work 8hr days 90% of the time but once in a blue moon i may have to work up to 10, i don't think this is a very unusual case at all.
>>
I got my puppers while attending university full time with a part time job and living with a roommate that wasn't very interested in a dog but was willing to take him out if he was home before I was or if he stayed home for the day. Usually came home during my breaks to let him out and play with him a bit before heading back to uni or work. If you can't come home to let him out then consider doggy daycare or hiring a dog walker to come by during the middle of the day. I do take him for an hour walk before and after I leave as well. Crate training can prevent him from getting into things he isn't supposed to, plus I always leave some sort of bone/kong and some toys to keep him occupied.

The pups came out very well mannered and obedient. I spent all my time at home with him and if I'm in the house he's always out of the crate and only goes in when I leave the house. He knows that as soon as I grab my keys and put on my shoes, he's in the crate waiting for his kong/treat. I also keep water in his kennel and feed him after he comes in from his morning romp in the yard. Its a bit important to make sure you feed the dog on a schedule so you can roughly predict when he is going to need to go out. He didn't turn out with any separation anxiety of sorts.

Honestly I just feel like it's up to your dedication as an owner. You have to put in those hours of work and extra effort into raising a puppy. I also got my puppy when I had winter break so I had time to introduce him to various aspects of living in a new home and start basic obedience training. Did lots of research before hand on what to do etc.

you forgot, "and then they end up with neurotic dogs because they think they're entitled to an animal despite how little care they're willing to give it"
>>
>>2251172
daycare is worth it and i would say it's absolutely necessary for the well being of this puppy.

Hey /an/ pls help like OP new dog question:

My parents got a female Aussie sheperd puppy and it's a year old now and 46 pounds. The vet says she's overweight and i just realized it's due to fact my parents give the dog a dog treat about 15 times a day? To get it to do basic tasks like stay or poop/pee or when it's being difficult rather than train it. Could this be making it gain weight and what are the long term health effects for this doggo? Pic related is her sleeping after 20 minute walk. How many of these 20 minut walks would she need per week to shed weight and stay at healthy weight despite my family over feeding her treats daily?
>>
>>2251223
Treats should be reserved for training and are meant to be more occasional. Slowly wean the treats off because really an adult dog should be able to do those sort of tricks without treats since it's basic obedience. Begin rewarding once every 2 times she sits etc etc until eventually she will sit without a treat. Now for my dogo I usually run a trick routine before giving him a treat. I.e. running through his trick roster.

Feeding too much or too frequently can lead to the dog being over weight. Long term, it can lead to issues with luxating patella, diabetes etc.

Aussie shepards are a high energy breed and should be exercising for more than just 20 minutes a day. Play fetch with her, try some agility, go for longer walks, or introduce her to hiking. They were need to be herding dogs so they also need a lot of mental stimulation too.

Best of luck with your dog an.

Only NEETS, families, couples, housemates, people who work a few hours a day or have scattered hours, people with a few weeks of vacation time, people who have friends or family, or people that can afford boarding can raise a young puppy. The big thing with young puppies is their bladder control and the fact that they can't be worked hard. So you're gone 10 hours a day, that puppy has to piss itself every 2 hours. Now it's learning that either it's ok to piss indoors, it's okay to live in it's piss, or both. Also, puppies are curious, have a lot of energy and need to explore the world. They can only do so much in a house. And because of their growing bones and muscle, you can't come home and run the fuck out of the puppy to tire it out; that can cause lasting damage. They need a lot of just play and exploring. They will either wait for you to get home and rarely sleep at night, or they will learn to be destructive in the house.

You have a blank slate, so you don't want to fuck up, if you wanted a dog with a ton of issues you needed to fix, just get a special needs adult dog. That's my take on it
>>
>>2251232
It's not my dog it's my narcissistic parents dog. I had no say in it being adopted. They won't take any input I give so really I just have to negate their damage as much as I can by walking it. I have health conditions which prevent me from doing as much exercise as it needs but I'm the only one doing the 20 minute walks every morning. Really frustrating to know they leave it be sedentary when I'm not here or can't walk it.

Is feeding a dog 10 treats a day PLUS it's 2 meals a day- at a minimal 20 minute walk a day going to lead to health issues with their dog?
>>
>>2251283
If she knows how to play catch, just use a Chuck it. It will still tire her out and provide some form of exercise without putting too much strain on you.

Aussies like any dog is prone to weight gain if they aren't getting enough exercise with a large food input. Check to see that they aren't just filling up a bowl twice a day and calling it a day. There are feeding suggestions with activity level and weight on the dog food. Plus suggest switching to a weight loss type of dog food to help out with getting her down to a normal weight.
>>
>>2251172
Don't do it. Goldies need people so badly and it would be a horribly cruel thing to do to one.
>>
If you'll be leaving it for a long time then get a cat, or wait until you have time for the puppy. If you're going to come home tired from work and forget about/not spend the rest of the day with your dog/puppy then I would absolutely not recommend this, for the dog's sake.

It's not to say people who work can't own dogs, it's just as the other anons who rightly said- puppies need a lot of attention in those early days, they need conditioning and training and socialisation in order to find their place in the world and live peacefully with you. If they don't get that it never ends well for anyone involved.

If you really insist on it then day care is an absolute must, but I would still recommend waiting until you have at least a week or more off work, you will want to get a good start on obedience training. >>2251212 This anon is a good example of how you can make it work. You have to put the work in, dogs are my favourite thing in the world and they're worth every second but they need your time and they need your patience.
>>
>>2251183
its called a family or a backyard
>>
>>2251261
this. OP, at the very least dont get a puppy as that requires a lot of free time and devotion.

just get a year old dog from a shelter. why would you want a puppy anyway?

imagine getting a (human) baby and leaving it alone for 10 hours a day. does that sound right to you?
>>
Don't get a puppy, especially if you plan on crating it for 8 hours a day. That isn't okay for an adult dog or a puppy.
>>
Thanks to those of you who gave helpful replies. I'll wait until I have a week or two off before getting the pup then I'll get a dog sitter to visit him during the day
>>
>>2251183
Get a fucking girlfriend.
>>
>>2251684
She has class 20min away while I'm at work
Neighbors have children and a big yard, it'll be fine
>>
the only thing people itt got right was the small bladder, once it can hold it you can leave it alone 8 hours just fine as long as you don't neglect it

people need to stop anthropomorphizing dogs
>>
>>2251693
samefag here, just make sure you give it something to occupy itself in the crate like a frozen kong or something and that it has water
>>
>>2251693
>anthropomorphizing
I hate that word so much.
wtf are you even implying by using it in this context? that it's ok to leave dogs alone with absolutely nothing to do for 8 hours every day?
in norway they call that prison.

fact is dogs are social animals, and social animals hate being alone (for the most part). this has nothing to do with anthropomorphizing, since guess what: humans arent the only social mammals.
>>
Puppies of 12 weeks need to be taken out every 2 hours. You're an idiot. Get an adult dog or just kill yourself.
>>
>>2251886
Plenty of people have already given me advice and I responded that i will hold off until i have time off and can get a sitter. Save your autism outbursts for people who simply get the puppy before asking for advice.
>>
>>2251893
I'm glad you're being responsible OP.
>>
>>2251180
>dogs
As in, adult dogs. OP has a fucking puppy.
>>

I am OP and I don't have the pup yet, read the fucking thread before posting
