Can plants die of old age?
If you were to put a plant in a theoretical environment where there is nothing that will eat or otherwise destroy it, and infinite perfect amounts of sunlight, water, and nutrients, would it eventually die?

depends on the plant. some are only meant to live for a little while. others, like many trees, will theoretically live forever.
Yes, they do.
Well, your annuals and biennials sure aren't going to last very long.
There are some clonal colonies of trees, shrubs and fungi that have had exceptionally long lifespans. Under the right circumstances they could probably just go on forever. See Pando the Trembling Giant, the Jurupa Oak, or Old Tjikko.

those are clonal trees, indivduals don't live nearly as long.

besides I didn't say that they live forever. I thought we were talking about a theoretical environment that could never exist. some trees don't die of old age- or at least if they do, we don't know it yet.

oldest known tree is a bristlecone pine, 5000 something years old.
