A Nintendog. Seriously. Maybe a stuffed animal that looks like their in-game pet if they really need something to cuddle.

Let them have that for a couple years and make them play with it daily to see if they're responsible enough (spoilers: they probably aren't because they're just a kid) before you give them a live animal to play with.

Tell them you can "borrow" either a cat or dog for 1 month and ask them which they prefer. Then search Craigslist/Kijiji/Gumtree/whatever for people who're giving away a cat or dog - these'll usually be older pets. Then drive out and get that free pet, and 1 months' worth of supplies.

After the month is up, if they're still in love with the pet and demonstrate responsibility, tell them the owner changed their mind and will let you keep it forever (which won't be too long if it's an older animal). Though if they're no longer interested in the pet, tell them it's time to say goodbye and that you have to return the pet. They'll understand and possibly be relieved if it was more work than they anticipated. You'll take the pet to a park and tie it to a tree, then return home.

so long as you're going to be the one cleaning up after the pet, almost anything. usually the issue is that parents give their kid a shit machine like a bunny and then expect them to feed it and clean up after it.

Yep, thirding this. Get a pet you want to get, because even if the kid "helps", it's ultimately your pet and your responsibility to take care of, OP.
If you don't want a pet and/or wouldn't get one without the kid begging for it, then don't get one.
