because people can't even take care of themselves, so they wouldn't be able to take care of a highly intelligent aquatic mammal.
Cockatoos hurt themselves when you don't give them enough attention. imagine what an animal like a dolphin would do when you obviously fail to give him the interaction it needs.

pets are actually objects used by the owner. so, you need something that cant be conscious of that, but at the same time has some interactive ability. a dolphin would realize that it is being used as a thing and would trash you.
