Is this the right place to discuss fossils? I've never seen fossils/paleontology threads here, but I'm not sure /sci/ would be the right place either.
Anyways, if so, just a fossil general thread.
>>2234044
there are prehistory and dinosaur threads here all the time, it's my main reason for coming to /an/
>>2234044
Ah, okay. I guess I'll start posting my fossils.

These two are some of my favourites-- the pyritized ammonite, spino tooth, and stonefly in amber.

You just missed a few months of the bruner collection.
last thread is still up, although it was mostly geodes.
>>2234044
Thanks for sharing OP.
>>2234456
Ah, sorry searched for fossils but I found nothing. If I'd continued, I would have seen more.
>>2234633
I just looked it up, really cool! I'll post another time, but I'm preparing for a hurricane in Florida.
>>2234643
No problem, glad to see people are interested. Probably gonna buy a shrimp fossil soon-- I'd collect them myself, but I'm busy right now. When I have the time, I'll head to Peace River and show you guys my stuff.
So it turns out the "whale vertebra" is more likely a fish's.
Also, I have a few other fossil fish I forgot to show-- I'm not at home right now, but I'll post asap.
Last one
BTW, If anyone wants to buy fossils, I get mine from UKGE and Fossilicious if I don't find them myself-- those are the only ones I know are reliable.

Dude the spinosaurus is by far my favorite Dino, it's always been a childhood fantasy to have a tooth, how would I go about getting one??
I'm thinking of getting a fossil from this guy.

I'd really like a Tapir fossil for my collection, and not like a tooth, but a pretty nice jaw specimen.

Look around, try ebay. But watch out for frauds. A lot of places that carries fossils can be faked and some look almost as real as the real thing.
What does /an/ think of strombolites?
How did they survive without oxygen?
>>2239197
I volunteer at Biscayne National Park, we're getting ready for national fossil in a few, and some of our fossils collected from Cutler Ridge fossil site look a lot like the ones here. I'm pretty sure they're legit.
Also, the website has a category JUST for replicas like the only terror bird fossil found in Florida and stuff like that.
>>2239216
Sweet, thanks for the find!
You should check out UKGE too, though: they recently got a bunch of jaw fossils-- crocodile, squirrel, etc.

feels bad man
>>2239216
how do you get into stuff like that
>>2239884
find the website of the place you want to volunteer at, there's almost always a "get involved" tab.
>>2239888
what yonot u do if can can interen?
>>2238143
>strombolites
Do you mean thrombolites, or stromatolites?
In either case, they probably didn't need oxygen. Some modern cyanobacteria are obligate anaerobes (meaning that they're actually killed by oxygen) or aerotolerant anaerobes (they don't use oxygen in their metabolism, but aren't killed by it)

Look, the National Park Service is having budget cuts and isn't able to pay for as many rangers as before, they'll regularly setup interviews for volunteers to help take care of the park. Mostly front desk and general maintenance. I work their fish tanks, and help teaching visitors when needed. And since our park is shadowed by our big brother Everglades, we are really chill and can be very personal with eachother and our guests.
>>2239890
What? You mean, "What do you do if you cannot intern?" Like if you need a paid job, not a volunteer job?
>>2239890
>what yonot u do if can can interen?
W-what?
"What you not you do if can can intern?"
"What you not do if can not intern?"
What the fuck?

That's pretty cool, I'm around an hour away but I'll probably see if I'll have time to volunteer this summer.
Thanks for the heads-up.
Why collect fossils though
>>2240823
Why collect anything? Because you like it
