Great! Took him to the vet on Friday for his annual health check and vaccination. He's got excellent teeth, clear chest sounds, good pulses. He's the perfect body weight, all lean muscle and very little fat. Heart rate of 70bpm, which puts him in the very fit category.
His buddy Archie went in at the same time, and while Archie's in as good a condition as can be expected, he's 8 years old now and has had severe osteoarthritis in both elbows for 6 and 1/2 years. He's his dysplasia in both hips, swelling over both hocks that never went away, and his pancreas doesn't function and will never function again. That said, he might have another 2-4 years in him and he's far from dead. He's still spry and reasonably active for a dog his age. He just doesn't have the same stamina, and I can see him take his time getting up now. Heart rate 90bpm, which is normal. I am feeling strangely melancholic, though I've known he was beginning to get old for months, if not years now. I guess it just suddenly hit me in the face.
