I'm thinking about getting a hissing cockroach as a pet.

With buggers, you just sort of have to hope the right anon is lurking. /an/ is also a slow board. Just chill and you'll get an answer eventually.

there's not much you have to be aware off, they are piss easy.
>>
>>2172888
Keep them warm and well fed. Don't keep them too warm, though, or else they'll start breeding and I doubt you want them to breed if you are keeping them as pets. Also be sure to keep them in a nice enclosure with proper husbandry and substrate.
>>
>>2172888

dont get a male and female, they will fuck and have babies, who will fuck and you end up with a shit ton of them and nobody will want them either so you will end up having to dump them.
They are cool though, have personalities and they use their hisses to talk, both to you and each other.

Do you have any insects, ausfag?
>>

Adults can too, I had one of mine just chilling out of the tank one day because of a gap in security.

You put an inch of vaseline around the rim of the tank and they cant climb past it.

I have 5 that I got for free from the store I always buy my frozen rats from because they kept fighting and ripping off each others antennas.

They're happily living in a terrarium now with a tokay gecko, a bibron gecko, 2 hermit crabs and a bunch of walking sticks.
They occasionally hiss at the tokay if he runs by reaally close, but they don't do anything to each other, and the geckos eat some of the baby roaches, so kinda unlimited food supply.

They're pretty cool dudes.

How smart are hissing cockroaches? What's their temperament.
Compared to other insects I mean.
For example herbivorous beetles are some of the dumbest fucking animals I've ever seen. The caterpillars of giant moths are really chill and can be handled easily (in my country at least), but don't have much in terms of intelligence beyond much leaves and move forward if there are no leaves.
Common Cockroaches are also pretty dumb, one night I was hearing weird bumping sounds coming from the bathroom (I don't have cockroaches in my apartment for more than 10 years, because when I moved in I underwent a program to destroy them all, but they climb through a drainage gap from my neighbors downstairs, although very rarely, there's no food in the bathroom you know). When I got in, there was a fucking large cockroach freestyle break-dancing in a small plastic basin, it kept hitting the margins of the basin making that bumping noise. Apparently it ended up on its back somehow and was trying to get back on it's feet, but all that was happening was it sliding like a pinball doing the most wicked break-dance moves since 1999.
>>
>>2176307
They're fucking cockroaches. Exactly how much intelligence are you expecting?
>>
>>2175825
Not in insects.
>>
>>2175753
I was wondering if you think a crested gecko would be okay with these guys, i inherited roaches under similiar circumstances as yours and want to safely conduct a multi species vivarium. I already have plants and the microfauna and if isopods can cohabitat with geckos why cant hissers?

How big is your enclosure though? And do they ever try to nip at the geckos while they sleep?
>>
>>2176335
Never had a crested gecko myself, but I can't see why not, if they have enough space to not drive each other nuts.
My enclosure is 120cm wide, 60cm high and 50cm deep.
Never once have I seen the roaches purposefully go near the geckos, neither the other way around. They mainly ignore each other, and only get close by accident, if the tokay is chilling under the lamp for example, and someone enters the room, he get startled and jumps/runs to a hiding spot, and if a roach is in the way, it's gonna get run over kinda haha
I'd say you can go for it.
>>
They might try a coup

What's the best species of roach for eating?
