Hornet question.
I live in southwest Ohio and the last few days while mowing the lawn I've seen a big-ass hornet looking motherfucker putzing around my porch. He looks fucking huge, about the size of my thumb.
But also while mowing, I saw him crawl into a little burrow in my lawn that I'd assumed some mole or snake or something had made.
Are there any types of actual hornets in my area that do this, or is this just one of those digger wasps that I don't need to worry about?

Is it somewhat sandy soil? Does it look like this?
I'd bet it's a cicada killer wasp. Harmless, as it shouldn't hurt you unless you physically grab it or try to eat it.

yeah, OP's description sounds like cicada killer. Another spectacular insect we sadly lack in california. The mating swarms look like great fun to watch:
