What's the all-around best snake in the hobby and why is

I kinda agree with this. Boas make fantastic pets and have my favorite personality of all of the snakes commonly kept. Only drawback is their size. I mean you can try to track down one from a locale that typically stays medium size. Like a Nicaraguan male BCI would only be 5-6 feet normally.

Some locales max out around BP size or even smaller, I feel like it can make an excellent alternative to a ball python if you're willing to fork over some extra shekels. Hands-down my favorite commonly kept snake species regardless of locale/subspecies.

Speaking of shekels, the BP meme craze has gotten so ridiculous lately that BCIs i'm seeing from the good breeders in my area are cheapers than the BPs.

My juvenile BCO is the meanest of all my snakes. Constantly hissing and striking whenever I take him out, so I've been neglecting to handle him in recent months. Any tips to calm him down?

Got my first boa two weeks ago, fed 4 days ago, not sure when I'm going to handle her. She's a Tarahumara locale and will probably max to 4 feet.

I've had tropical arboreal and arid ground snakes and everything in between. The only difference is the amount of work you have to put into them. It's not like they have interesting personalities or such.

Its what I was thinking, but it is very dark for a columbian and it doesn't have any red where every columbian I've seen has prominent brick spots on the tail. I was wondering if any other BCI looks like a darker columbian without red.

So what's the story on blood pythons? I like the look of them but have no experience with that particular type of snake. The short fatness of them intrigues me.

It's Colombian, they're highly variable.

Also, I think you've got your boas mixed up. Colombians don't have brick red tails, boas from the species Boa constrictor (previously BCC) do, which consists of Peruvians, Surinames/Guyana (they're the same), and Brazilian. Colombians are Boa imperator. There is speculation of "BCC" Colombian, but they're not exactly common in the pet trade.

Nope, they're highly variable, they can be anything from black to a cinderblock red. I've never seen an imperator with a brick red tail like a Boa constrictor. (They're no long BCI and BCC but BC and BI - Boa constrictor and Boa imperator).

DNA evidence mostly from what I gather, but I'm sure there are other points, I'd have to do some digging. It's a new development, so it's going to take awhile for it to gain traction, but so far as I can tell the reclassification is official. It's not really surprising, though.

What about the other Boa constrictor subspecies (sabogae, occidentalis, longicauda, etc..)? Have they been elevated to full species status or are they subspecies of one or the other?

Out of all the snakes I've kept my favorite is the coastal carpet python. Almost all of the ones I've had were just as docile as a ball python. Be careful when feeding though, they strike first and ask questions later, i've gotten nailed a few times that way.

As far as I know sabogae has been included in Boa imperator, not sure about occidentalis and longicauda. Other than BCC and BCI, most of the others are still undergoing reclassification last I heard.

Yeah it's hard to find things right now, the old classifications keep popping up. I have a couple links but they don't discuss anything beyond DNA evidence.
