the shells are part of them anon, like most shelled animals. Only some creatures actually switch em up as they grow, and those usually use a shell that was made by another creature.

Never saw a turtle in person, I thought they were like snails and could leave their shells, but I should have known better you see slugs looking for shells all the time and never a naked turtle.
