"When a person died, people came from various villages to make a 'death visit' ; they brought gifts for the performance of a special ceremony, one of the most valued gifts being a live bird: either a young Golden Eagle, a Bald Eagle, or a California Condor. This bird was raised in captivity until the time for the 'bird feast' or 'eagle killing' ceremony arrived. The bird was then taken to a sacred enclosure by a Paha whose ceremonial attire included either a red and black, or red, white and black bodypaint and an eagle feather skirt. The bird was strangled to death, care being taken to avoid shedding a single drop of its blood. The birds lifeless body was skinned and then buried within the enclosure. The feathers were used in the costliest and most elaborate ritual paraphernalia or for decorating images of the dead."
