I'm adopting a 2 year old male from a friend soon, would it bother the dragon very much if he were switched onto carpet or newspaper instead of sand (if that's what he's been on)?

Yes. Sometimes beardies are active enough that they wear them down themselves, but in the case of OP image those nails definitely need a trim.

Check Google for tutorial on how to go about it. It will have pictures of what is too long and what length to trim to.
