Geckos only eat once every other day. I'm surprised you were able to get it to eat twice daily for a while. Must have been hungry. In future, offer mealworms/roaches in a small smooth sided dish that they can't climb out of. Only offer food every other day. Also, you need to be dusting those insects with calcium +D3. And gutloading them if you haven't been.

Look up house gecko care on Google to make sure your temperatures are correct. Confirm whether or not house geckos need uv light (i dont know off hand). Do you have sufficient climbing decor and hides in the tank?

This is also winter and geckos slow down considerably and eat less from late November to March even if they don't go in to brumation.

Almost a week into having my first leopard gecko juvenile. I had been feeding him/her 8 small mealworms every other day but the gecko still seems so hungry so I'm wondering if I should leave mealworms in the food dish all the time instead and monitor how much they are eating. Do geckos know when to stop eating or will my Leo eat itself to death? My gecko is about 4in long and not sure on the age.
>>
>>2014380
Yes, increase feeding amounts. You can also feed daily for a few months. Leos will not eat themselves to death. Usually they will eat until they vomit once, lesson learned, and only eat what they need for the rest of their life.

Give him as much as he can eat in 15 minutes. That's a good rule o' thumb.
>>

>>
>>2014411
Pacman frogs are composed of a few vital body parts that I'll kindly list for you:

>a mouth
>a stomach
>nubs that carry the mouthstomach to food
>some skin connecting it all and I think maybe they might have eyes

Pacmen are naturally fat when fed well
>>
>>2014450
That's fine for now. As long as the turtle can get out and bask, it's big enough.
>>
>>2014438
only exception is garter snakes.
>>
>>2014438
>crossbreeding
Could you crossbreed a Thayeri Kingsnake and a Pueblan Milksnake? I'm interested in what the babbys would look like.
>>
>>2014489
they're both of the Lampropeltis genus, so I'd imagine its possible
but seeing as how king snakes love to eat other snakes, you probably have a 50/50 shot at either babies or someones getting eaten

If you're attached to either of them I'd advise against it. Plus what are you going to do if you end with a clutch of like 20 crossbreeds?
>>
>>2014489
Probably? They're both colubrids. I know you can do king x corn. Looking up now...

Okay yes you definitely can cross king snakes with corns. It turns out most of the colubrids can breed with other colubrids successfully.

>>
Ive had a crested gecko for about a week and a half now. Ive made sure hes eating and has a safe enclosure but lately hes been on the ground more and hes really pale now. Is he just shedding or should I be worried? Hes only about 4 inches long
>>
>>2014553
Pale means going in to shed. He's probably on the substrate to be at most humid part of tank. You can give the tank an extra mist in addition to the normal once per day for the next couple days to help.

Is your humidity in the 50%-80% range?
>>
>>2014411
Bruh they are supposed to get fat, all they do is sit in their moss and snuggle up to the moisture in hopes of finding food.
>>
>>2014380
When i had a baby i fed it 10 meal worms a day, and once every two weeks feed it 6 wax worms. They need the extra food because they haven't developed any fat on their tail.
>>
>>2013694
Panther, they are a real pretty animal to keep. Too bad they only live to be 5 years old. They are absolute dolls.
>>

I read somewhere that you shouldn't directly mist a leo as there skin is sensitive to that. Is this not true? Pic related is my guy that I just got( or girl. Haven't sexed it yet bc he/she is new to the environment. Don't want to stress it out too much than it already is).
>>
>>2014820
It won't harm them but, like every species of gecko, they don't like it and it serves no purpose. There's no need to mist a leo tank at all if there is a moist hide.

Welcome back calyxise.
I got a heatlamp for my leo, and my question is, is she annoyed/scared when I keep my normal light on for a while into the night?
Got the heatlamp on from 8 til 20, but I'd like to keep my ceiling light on until around 23 pm...
The ceiling light is not above the terrarium, but it will be reached by some light.

Is it okay for an underweight beardie to brumate? I got one a few months ago that was really thin. I've gotten her to gain some weight since then, but she's recently stopped eating for seemingly no reason. She doesn't have parasites or anything like that. I'm pretty sure she is brumating. She weighs about 287 g right now, and has only lost a few grams since she stopped eating. Can I let her do her thing, or do I need to intervene?
>>
Hey guys. I was the guy asking about about crested geckos in the last thread. I've been doing my research. I've had a lot of conflicting on cage size. would this be able to house one?

also, would I be able to add another later on? or would I have to get a bigger one. (assuming this is even optimal)

My leopard gecko hasn't been eating much in recent weeks. She is an adult and when she was growing up, she ate a lot. I give her some meal worms and when they wriggle around, she gets excited and walks up to them ready to strike but then she just licks them or nibbles on them and ignores them. The same with crickets. Not sure what could be causing it, temps are fine and everything. I think her tail might also be shrinking because of this. Can someone tell me if her tail size is normal? Pic related

Another question, what is the best way to store 100-150 crickets together without them eating each other? Do I just need a bigger container or is it not feasible to store that many together? They certainly have enough food so I guess they're trying to remove perceived competition for resources.

As someone who knows absolutely nothing about snake keeping/breeding, couldn't you just affix some manner of muzzle to the faces of the snakes to prevent them from opening their mouths? Or even just use rubber bands? Or would they try to constrict each other to death?
>>
>>2015803
Both snakes are constrictors.
>>
>>2015782
Hasn't been eating much or hasnt been eating at all? Still eating and passing stool/urates but smaller amounts is normal in winter months.

Crickets; one nice big sterilite tub with lots of air holes. Fill tub half full with cardboard egg crates. Cannibalism goes way down when they can all snuggle in to the egg crates.
>>
>>2015873
Thanks for the reply. I don't think she has been eating at all. I cleaned out the cage ~2 weeks ago and there is only one piece of poop yet several urates. I have only seen her ingest one meal worm in all that time.

For the crickets, I just have a container with an area of 17x11in(43x28cm). I assume I need a bigger space or just less crickets? How many could I fit comfortably in this space?
>>
>>2015976
Hmm... try some different insects; phoenix worms, butterworms, small hornworms.

About 75 crickets in a bin that size. The larger the bin the less problems you will have with keeping them alive.

There's no need for full sphagnum moss substrate. They don't need that high and constant humidity. A big water dish and some sprays every so often is enough. At least in my experience.

The animal needs places to "perch". My gecko spends all day behind fake plants while in vertically diagonal piece of wood where he can simply stand on. When he comes out at night he usually goes to more flat surfaces and just stands there. You don't have any places like that.

Pic related is my terrarium. It has more dead leaves now, I need to get some sort of led strip in there to provide more lightning.
Behind the big cork piece there's another piece of wood and the fake plants, where he "perches" and sleeps during the day. At night he stands on the top and bottom platforms a lot.

He rarely sleeps on the bottom left gap and inside the cork. So providing some different hiding places would also be good.

If you can't get a better setup than that for now I would do as >>2016183 said.
>>
>>2015803
Not only are there no snake muzzles, that would be rather inhumane to say the least. A rubber band could easily cut off parts of their face, I'm not even sure why you thought any of that would be ok?

The tub is 12 inches by 12 inches. The gecko itself is only 2.5 inches now.

As for ventilation, I have a lot of holes drilled in the lid. Does there need to be another spot for ventilation?

Thanks for the help, I'm going to work on it. Pic related is the enclosure now.

Please purchase a digital hygrometer and put
the probe in the tank about a third of the way up from the bottom. You're looking for a baseline humidity of 50-60% along with a daily spike to higher percentage when you mist. If it's too low with just the paper towel, go ahead and add in a couple handfuls of moss.

Size of tank is okay right now but you will need to upgrade that in about 6 months.

Pick up a cork round from pet store and put it in. Geckos love those and your's needs a dark place to hide.

You can offer much less food than that. Baby cresties only eat about a half bottle cap worth a day.
>>
>>2016319
Thank you, I appreciate the help. Where can I find a hygrometer? And I asked for a hiding tube at the pet store but they had none
>>
>>2016346
Pet store should have hygrometers in the reptile aisle. If not, amazon sells them.

For hides, there's lots of stuff you can use instead of cork bark. Section of PVC pipe from hardware store and wrap some plastic plants around it, paper towel roll, section of cardboard poster tubing from post office, etc. Suction cup shower soap dishes work great as perches. Make sure to thoroughly wash any plastic or PVC from hardware store before putting it in to get off whatever gunk left on it from the factory.
>>
>>2016346
Wal-Mart also sells them. They're for homes, but a $15 hygrometer/thermometer combo at Wal-Mart is going to be of way better quality than a $15 hygrometer on Amazon or at the pet store.
>>
>>2016388
True. Or at the very least of equal quality for a fraction of the price. Just make sure the one you buy has a probe so you don't have to put the entire thing in the tank.

Of that particular list of herps. Which one do you think is more difficult? I can maybe grant you tortoise but the rest are very easy.

Ackie climate could be made easier if you live in an already very humid environment. If in non coastal north America where humidity is very low much of the year, the high basking temp in addition to the moderate to high humidity is not an easy balance to achieve without running in to problems one way or the other.

so, I've kept all of those but leachies. Ackies are easier than Uros, BTS and plenty of tortoises. You serious have that hard a time with humidity? just put a goddamn water dish in there, shits easy. It's more work to get a day's worth of salad ready for a uro than it is to do everything for an ackie for a week. The only way I found ackies difficult is that one of mine was bitey and I'm apparently a bit allergic to it so my finger would be stiff for a couple days.
>>

I have 2 African Clawed Frogs, and recently they have been staying at the top of the tank. They used to burrow under a rock, but I moved the aquarium to my new home 3 weeks ago so they no longer have their little cubby. I would say they are at the bottom of the tank 80%+ of the time, but sometimes I'll walk by and one or both of them are floating at the top, entire body submerged but eyes and mouth out of the water. When I walk near the tank they go back down, I assume the vibration startles them.

They are eating fine and behave normally, just like to poke their faces out of the water. Is this anything to be concerned about? They share the tank with a large pleco, two Dalmatian mollies, 3 giant danios, and 4 zebra danios. (I know they will probably eat the zebras eventually)

I use an aquarium gardening claw to "hand" feed the frogs so I know they aren't going hungry. I'll feed them mysis and brine shrimp, occasionally I'll feed them bloodworms.

Tl;Dr my 2 ACF's will float at the top of the tank with just their faces over the surface, otherwise behave normally. Should I be concerned?
>>
>>2016768
mash up other kinds of fruit and mix half/half with cgd. also, yes the Pangea is going to help. i have never known a crested gecko to turn its nose up at Pangea, all of them love it.

Go easy on the bananas. It binds calcium and so is not good for them as a regular thing. Try mashed grapes, mango, papaya, apple sauce (unsweetened).

when my gargoyle was a hatchling she gave me fits about her eating. i night i finally saw her eating and realized why it looked like she hadn't been touching her food; she would never lick from the middle of the dish, always slid her tongue right down the edge. This resulted in no lick marks of any kind visible on the surface.

She's all grown up now and has changed this habit. Now her thing is to wait until the cgd surface dries a bit and will bite in to it like a like it's a solid substance.
>>
>>2016794
I know when mine was younger he would have a bulking phase, where he started looking fat, and a lengthening phase where he was getting longer but it made him look skinny. I think that's typical, I know others have had the same thing happen and I'm told it's typical.

Somone might call me retarded for that, though.

I got to a point where I started giving him what seemed like not enough food and spreading it super thin to see if he was, in fact, eating. THEN I noticed the missing food.

Is it okay to handle your juvenile leopard gecko daily? For the first few days I let him/her alone completely but now I try and spend a very brief period of time once a day holding my gecko. >>
>>2017543
Most common Leo morphs are

Tremper albino
Bell albino
Blizzard/blazing blizzard
Patternless
Mack snow
Hypo/super hypo/super hypo carrot tail
Tangerine

Google for photo examples of those. Things get more expensive when you have a leo with multiple genes combined or rare/hard to breed recessive combinations.

so, i have a corn who had to trade off of his bedding for mats and towels (he loves playing in towels and blankets with me, so i bought a bunch of small ones and rotate as they get dirty)

the only problem is, he seems to consider his green mat a "green towel" and just digs under it and hangs out down there on the glass

he had to change in the first place from getting little snakey ahsma from the dust (which he shouldn't have, if the bedding was the quality it said)
im wondering if anyone has any other sensitive suggestions, that would possibly let him actually burrow more. iv done research, but alot of sites are a bit generic in their descriptions. people who suggest paper, only say news paper and paper towels. not if shredded or not changes anything. Or if other paper types work. the same goes for material. the same goes for other materials "only use this eco terra shit" or "nigga, why aint you using coconut fibers err day".

tl:dr substrate suggestions for sensitive corn. natural habitat similarity not necessary

>>
>>2017718

Shredded paper isn't great for snakes (eco bedding etc).

I suggest trying a different brand of aspen chips, see how that goes. Chips, mind you. Not shavings. The chips are less dusty.
>>
>>2017721
Tangerine tornado is a line bred version of the super hypo carrot tail baldy, emphasizing darker oranges. That's a pretty fancy morph you have there, more rare than sunglows. Only produced by urban gecko of Canada I think?

A sunglow is a super hypo tangerine carrot tail with one of the three albino strains; ie, tremper sunglow, bell sunglow, or jungle sunglow.

Thanks for the info, pretty nice to know!
I'm from Europe, and I got her from a local breeder.
I'm really happy to have her, but if the guy ever has a sunglow girl, I'll get one of those as well.
She's my first leo, got her about 2 and 1/2 months ago, she looks healthy (fat tail), eats okay (I think), poops every 2-3 days, shed 3 times so far (was shedding already the day after I got her) without me having to assist her, so I'm pretty confident that I'm doing a lot right, that's why I'm thinking about getting a second one!
Pic rel is her, sand is only the filling in between the tiles. Got a humid and a dry hide on the warm side (air/ ground temp under the stone construction is around 30-32°C, inside the dry is about 28-29.3, cold is around 23-24.), 1 hide in the middle, 1 hide on the cold side.
She however mostly stays on the warm side.
How can I get that side even warmer? I switched from 75W bulb to 100W, but there's hardly a difference. I'm tempted to switch to a heat map, but as it's winter, I need a bulb anyways....(Or am I simply worrying too much? I mean, like I said above, she's really doing fine, she even crawls on my hand from time to time whilst feeding. The breeder guy said that my temps are okay, that "I could even go colder"(but I'm def. not doing that, no worries)).
>>
>>2017943
Temps are good, no worries. As long as leo has one spot that gets up to 30-32 that's quite alright.

Nice setup! Tile with sand to fill the gaps works well and looks great too.

Leos very rarely have a problem shedding if they have access to a moist hide. I had one that loved his moist hide so much I started to worry he was spending too much time inside it and would get a respiratory infection. ha!

Mine likes hiding there as well extremely often, I already had the same worries, but then again, she knows that there is another warm hide with less humidity, soo...
I think she likes hiding there cos it's a bit colder I guess, as well as water droplets to drink maybe.
Thanks for the kind words on my setup, I can take a few pictures of the whole thing tomorrow. Only thing that I'm also a bit concerned/ annoyed about is that crickets have tons of hiding spots. I usually let them in for about 2 hours to give her time to eat, but she doesn't always find them, so I usually make sure that I see her eat one cricket + 2-ish mealies every 2-3 days, then I let her hunt for the rest.
Also, >>2014897 was my question, what are your thoughts on it? Does she simply have to "learn" to deal with it?
>>
>>2018001
The light in the room isn't a big deal. You can test it to see if she's annoyed by turning the light off earlier and seeing if she comes out more. Even if she is bothered this isn't the kind of thing that will badly stress them out. It just might cause her to spend more time in her hides during that time.

>>
>>2018045
They're easy. Paper towel or aspen for substrate. Two or three hides. Make sure the hides are not too big. Snakes like them best if they can curl up inside and still be touching the outer edges on all side. Big wide shallow water dish. Ask whoever you get snek from what size mice it is currently feeding on and when last feed was before you pick it up. Under tank heater for heat. Put temperature probe in the warm side hide.

Never taken care of a rehab snake. Not sure.
>>
>>2018056
also a branch or some pvc pipe or something for snake to climb. corns enjoy climbing on occasion.

also also, make sure you can securely lock the screen top/front access door. they can be sneaky little ninjas if they want out.

That sounds like your local Craigslist to me. Most online/specialized breeders charge a flat $50 for overnight shipping (because it's a live animal), which leaves you with not a lot of money for a breeder crestie.

But it's Christmas, so tons of people are trying to adopt out animals, especially reptiles.

You might be in luck, might even be able to snag a crestie will its habitat for that.

Do they like being touched? What is the purpose of them climbing? Do they even recognise something that's bad or a threat? And why then was my beardie not at all threatened, but actually curious about a massive cat running around?

The Urban Gecko and Northern Gecko (Mark Orfus) are the two best gecko breeders in Canada. I have two cresties and a garg from Northern and another crestie from TUG. Awesome service from both of them. Northern Gecko is especially good if you're looking for non-garg/crestie New Caledonians. Mark also breeds leachies, sarasinorum, chahoua, and E. My ball python won't eat and hasn't since I purchased him maybe 2.5 months ago. He did poop after about...two weeks? So we figure he had just eaten. Gone through three rats, the guy we bought him from informed us he'll eat live medium feeder rats.

>>2018231
Not a snake expert or even an owner, but to my knowledge, ball pythons are infamous for going on hunger strikes. It wouldn't surprise me if the new environment has him a bit stressed and he just doesn't wanna eat. I wouldn't worry about it too much unless he's showing signs of sickness otherwise. Just keep offering food and he'll probably eat eventually. Gove him some time to acclimate, too.
>>
>>2018254
He seems pretty okay!
He hides often, but I'm told they are a skiddish breed and like to hide. His color is really good just worried he'll starve...
>>
>>2018255
Yeah, most snakes are very keen on hiding and will spend most of their time doing so. And to my knowledge, a snake can go roughly around a year without food, depending on age and health. Unless there's something wrong with him, I'm sure he'll eat once he's hungry :)

so I have house gecko and cuban tree frog that I caught in mid florida ( invasive species).
I researched some care sheets and I understand the humidity aspect, but do these creatures really need the thermal gradient from 78 85 with hot spot 90? like... I see these geckos/ frogs just hanging outside if it is not so cold.
>>
>>2013400
what do u do for heat? I caught a house gecko too.. hoping they do ok in room temp around 76- 79 degree F
>>
>>2018601
caresheets are written for ideal temperature gradient to maximize life span of the herp. So, no they don't strictly need those things but they will be healthier if you provide. This is a small part of the reason captive animals live longer than wild ones generally; aside from predation, disease, etc.
>>
>>2013237

>those fucking flame decals

didnt kno u could pimp ur frog to look like guy fiery
>>
>>2018614
ha! cool. So my house gecko and cuban tree frogs will do fine in room temp., sort of like crested geckos right? although it may not be "ideal", nothing in nature is really "ideal" so whateves its fine? lol
>>
>>2018685
In nature the animal gets to choose what's best for it though. It can take advantage of light and heat when it's available, or it can slow it's metabolism when it's cold. They can also bask and move around to find ideal temps. Constant room temp ignores their needs to find ideal temps. Id recommend a hermit crab heat pad. It's small, cheap, safe for plastic containers and let's the gecko choose when it needs heat and when it wants to cool off.
>>
>>2018685
I didn't say that. Besides, it's really easy to provide a temperature gradient. You can put a small heat mat against the side of your tank as anon above suggested. Or, put a normal 30w incandescent bulb on the top of the tank, set for a 12 hours on during day and 12 hours off at night cycle. About 30w-40w should give you the desired 10 degree temperature increase below the bulb. If it's too hot, move the bulb a couple inches further away.

I semi recently got finishes with my iguana enclosure and was wondering how long it would take for my iguana to outgrow it.
Current it is 3''9'''x4'x5'6''(it was supposed to be larger by about half a foot on each side but the fucking boy at home depot cut the wood all fucked up and I didnt realize until I had started sanding and finishing the walls.

I do let him freely move about the room from around 9:00 to 8:00 but he spends most of his time perched inside the cage under his basking light so hes not confined for most of the day and can sit in the windowsil or on my bed/desk if when he pleases. But I digress I just would like an estimate to how long his current enclosure will be suitable.

I've got grout hides for my leopard gecko, his moist hide smells of mildew after two weeks.

At that point I bleach it, scrub it and rinse it very well.

I had tried using mod podge to seal it, but that only made it worse so I've scraped it all out.

I have non-toxic Water-based wood finish.

Any reason I cannot use that?
>>
My ball just finished shedding, I noticed she has a little bit attached to like the last half inch of her tail
should I moisten it and try to get it off, or is it even anything to concern myself over?
>>
>>2018792
Probably easier to just use a Tupperware container with hole cut in the side. Dress up the outside of it if you want it to look naturalistic.
>>
>>2018797
Sure. Dab some water on and make a gently rolling motion against it to loosen the shed. If it doesn't come off, don't worry. Just moisten it every other day so it doesn't dry out and start to constrict; it will come off on the next shed.

How is your humidity in the tank?
>>
>>2018809
normally I make sure it plenty high when she goes into shed. But I was away on a small trip, so I had to leave my family in charge of misting.
and because they're a bunch of weenies and also not around here late at night, the humidity probably wasn't super great when she actually shed.
>>
>>2018797
Yes, I'd work to get it off, if left on her tail, it could cut off the circulation and she could lose the tip of her tail. That's normally more common with snakes that have thin tails like corns or garters, but I've heard of it happening with balls, too.

If shes only been refusing food recently it could just be because of the cold weather, tail size looks fine and its not unusual for them to hardly eat all winter

It would be easier to not use crickets at all, theyre not that good nutritionally and carry a lot of parasites, dubias are a better option if youre putting in the effort to keep them to be honest

No, they don't bite.
No, they don't cannibalize each other AS OFTEN as crickets.

They don't smell as bad as crickets, they're packed with good shit for your reptile, and they're super easy to gutload and care for.

They don't breed below temps in the high seventies, so even if they do escape, at this time of year, they'll more likely than not die before the Spring.

Huh. So i have been putting some pieces of repashy grub pie in my pictus geckos' food dish the past couple months as a source of moisture and gutload for the worms to nibble at while they wait for geckos to bestir themselves to eat. I had tried getting the geckos to eat grub pie before but, since it does not wiggle as live bugs do, they didn't want any part of it.

Now, the past two weeks I have noticed some bits of grub pie being eaten. Last night's serving of mealworms and grub pie produced an interesting result. Today I see only a couple mealworms gone and ALL of the grub pie gone. Holy crackers! They've developed a taste for it. This is great news. If they continue to nom the grub pie it will decrease the amount of live bugs I need to keep on hand to feed them.

repashy's grub pie is a powdered vitamin and insect (i think mostly solider fly larvae) meal replacement concoction designed specifically for pure insectivores and insectivore/vegetable eating herps; beardies, skinks, leos, etc. You mix it with boiling water and it produces a sort of jelly-type consistency, which you then slice in to pieces for your herp.

There are no species commonly kept in the pet trade that can/should be kept on sand. The only ones I can think of are Arabian sand boas and sandfish skinks. NOTE: Arabian sand boas are not Kenyan sand boas, and just because they're both called sand boas doesn't mean they both live in sand. Kenyan sand boas are also Egyptian sand boas, so if someone says Egyptian sand boas can be kept on sand, they're wrong.

You'll spend a lot less money on aspen, and have a lot less heartache. I don't understand the obsession with sand. It looks like shit, is fucking expensive, and keeping it clean is a bitch.

That said, a sand mix may be ok. If you do 3 parts EcoEarth and 1 part sand, or 3 part something else like cypress mulch or something. Just don't use pure sand, it's the worst of all substrates.
