I'm a total background character in life. I go to meetup events and stuff and try to talk to people, be natural and friendly and all, but I can tell I'm that person who's name you forget 3 seconds after they say it, and who's just sort of invisible in the back. How do I become more interesting? I'm trying to make friends since it really sucks being alone in uni.

Do you remember every person you see at a meetup? Don't think of yourself as pitiable or anything like that just because you're not the most memorable guy in the room- most people aren't. That said, just try to talk to anyone that looks interesting to build up your conversational skills. Soon enough you'll be good enough to get more out of meetups.
