A girl I worked with who has an HR manager aunt says I can collect unemployment for "constructive discharge". i.e. they made me quit. But from what I understand, getting unemployment isn't as easy as collecting a check these days. You have to send in job apps and go to workshops and shit, which I'm not willing to do. I think she's miscalculating the risk-reward on this one. I'm just gonna call the lawyer in the morning and say he can come borrow the drive. The contractor shit clearly isn't going to happen and I don't even want it at this point. Just want to wash my hands of this company and move on.

They're going to fuck you over in court if you don't give it back. It's not a good idea to play games with high powered company lawyers, unless you want your life ruined.

Give them back their hard drive, but before you do, get in writing that they will leave you alone both civilly and criminally if you give them back their shit.
