I've never done this before, but I need an Uber or Lyft this weekend. Which is better?
I need to travel 17 miles roundtrip, so I may need to save up some serious cash.
Can't you just pick a normal taxi company? it's usually the same price, decent cars, they have apps now, only difference is that they have a physical office you can walk into.
If that's fine you can phone them right now and ask how much. It's not like they close.

Do this, fuck Uber and Lyft for increasing marginal profits by forcing employees and consumers to assume more risk.

Yeah I gotta say, I got in with uber because everyone was saying how much cheaper it is than taxi's but fuck, I ordered one to take my drunk ass home last weekend. 14 miles and cost me like 30 bucks. Taxi would have been about the same.
Serious cash. I'm laughing my balls off rn

I've never had a problem with Uber, myself; been using it for years. Where I live, it's a good ~30% cheaper than taxi's, and way more convenient with driver location tracking, payment splitting, etc. I also fucking love just getting into a cab and getting out, without having to fuck around with cash or cards.
Uber likes to give discounts/free credit for your first ride, which can make this weekend of yours cheaper for you. Have a nosey online for any promotions in your region, and failing that, there is the standard function of referral: get one of your friends that are already on Uber to invite you to the Uber service with their unique code, use that code before your first ride. Both of you will get some free credit (Can't remember how much it is).
You can also estimate ride costs with Uber using their cost-estimating website, or straight from within Google Maps.
