How does one get into stand-up comedy?
I'm aware that my first few years might suck.
If you're a chick, it's over.

You losers are always discouraging and it's fucking pathetic

Perfect your craft and yes, embarrass yourself several times, maybe over the course of a few years
For example, Louie CK wasn't exactly funny until he divorced, maybe 10 years into his career - I think it involved getting w0ke. The most popular form of comedy at the moment involves being oddly frank and aware of the way things are, but you can take any approach you feel is right.
He wasn't hilarious his first ten years, but he was entertaining for what it's worth

Don't riff. Construct a set. Most open mic sets are 10 to 15 minutes maximum so you won't need a lot of material. Practice it in front of a mirror. Listen to your favorite comedians and work on your delivery. You're going to suck. You're going to bomb. You'll find out sooner than later if you have what it takes to excel in the field.
Sign up for open mics. Take any opportunity you can to practice for a crowd, even if its a shitty 30 person room on a week day. How many of these opportunities you can get is completely dependent on the scene in your city. If there is no scene then you won't progress very quickly. Comedians are harsh, dysfunctional people. Don't be surprised if they are a little less than supportive.

I would say that the crowd is the mirror and never practice in front of a mirror
