why not just aim to be realistic?

hopeful and cynical are words used to describe people who are not self aware. optimists think their being realists. pessimists think they're being realists. you don't purposely be one or the other.

anyone who calls themselves a pessimist is saying they purposely ignore reality to assume the worst in every situation instead of assuming the average.
