Why does it hurt so much if it's not true?? Why do I care

I know I'm not a pedophile, but if the whole world was calling me a pedophile it would still have serious consequences.

whatever they're saying about you is indicative of something else, even if its not true it at least paints a picture that you are lesser to other people. even if you believe its not true, if society sees it that way then yeah you kinda are.

Op here. This person just went on a ramble about how I'm the biggest loser on earth, this person doesn't know me. So all that they said was complete bullshit, and didn't even have any shred of truth at all. But why does it still bother me so much?
