Do it. Assert your dominance as man of the house. Don't go overboard on him, but if he really deserves to get smacked, put him in his place.

As someone who had an alcoholic abusive dad, I can tell you it ain't worth it man. It feels good in the moment but then you have to live the rest of your life paying for those 30 seconds of justice. The world just isn't built around vigilante justice. He'll press charges and you'll be in jail, then you'll have to do a whole bunch of stupid shit to clear your name, all the while cursing the world why you ended up paying for your dad's behavior. Don't go down that road. Instead, talk to your mom and let her know you are on her side. Later on maybe convince her to leave if that's how you feel.

my best friend overpowered his father and actually beat the shit out of him really bad a few years ago. he stills talks about it sometimes, and feels overwhelming shame (it would seem, he's a real piece of work so I just don't know sometimes)
