How do I do laundry without having the fabric of my clothes become very rough and hard, and without fading a lot?
I've had this issue with doing laundry a lot, so I assume I just do it improperly. Do I use too much detergent? Do I run it on the wrong cycle? How do I fix this?
Here's a picture of the options on the washing machine I use.

What temperature setting are you using?
dumb ass
cold water + fabric softener + soap for clothes you want to maintain relatively fresh wash with like colors
hot as shit water + more soap + fabric softener for dirty shit like socks and underwear
It can also be that your water is too hard, I think there are detergents geared towards hard water
And the final question. I have a shirt like this. White shirt with a black pocket. How would I wash this? I can't put it in with other white shirts to bleach because the black pocket will be affected right?

Usually set it to SUPER on the Heavy Duty side.

Too hot, like the previous anon said, high temps are for underwear, other shit can be qashed in the warm setting

So i've just been missing out on fabric softener. Do I just put it in the wash like I do with the detergent?

Okay so use the coldest water

Oh for cold water clothes DO NOT dry using dryer.
15 at most with high heat, let them air dry after

Your washer should have a little compartment where you put in the softener pouring directly onto the clothes can stain/discolor them in some cases. If not, wait for your washer to already be in use and add in while it's already wet.
Shirts with graphic designs should be washed inside out
