I signed up for a new gym today and asked the instructor to help show me how to squat as I have mobility problems and couldn't do it without raising my heels.
I told him that I was born with a feet defect and that I had surgeries because it was related and I'm not sure if it was the right thing to do. I've heard him talking about me with another instructor and I'm afraid I'll be seen as some kind of cripple and looked down on.
Did I make a mistake?
He's probably more than willing to help you. Unless he's talking about negative things, you're fine.
Gym instructors are ridiculously nice and tolerant.

The instructor's main concern here is making sure he doesn't tell you to do something that's going to cause you injury. He was probably taking with the other instructor about possible alternatives to squats which won't aggravate your foot problem.
