Some older people - far from all, but a noisy minority - realize that they missed their chance or blew it or maybe even just were not good enough. And some of them look at younger people who may not have any more of a chance than the older had but haven't blown it yet, and they envy and resent that you still might make it when they didn't.
Pity him and ignore him.
