How much should you infer about someone from their social media? The things they post on instagram, snapchat, whatever. When does it turn from "huh so this is what this person is like" to "i'm reading way too much into this."

Nobody has any reason to post their actual life on Facebook, they have every reason to post a highly exaggerated successful version of their life online.
I see what my sister posts on it and if I didn't know any better I would believe she was some sort of trophy wife leading the good life going on a gazillions holidays a year.
Same goes for some of my friends and other family members.
It is an asinine and vicious circle, a game in which people try to 1-up each other constantly. Worst of all is I can't help but wonder if it is actually making them happy.
I don't bother with social media and I can't say I feel like I am missing out on anything. Furthermore I am pretty normie mind you, I go out excessively (borderline alcoholism yaaa) and socialize a lot, I just prefer it to be at a bar instead of a website.
its a good way to see their basic interests and hobbies and if they are an argumentative cunt. People going /pol/ on faceberg on fucking ree rees

imo, ppl who post shit in social media in order to make themselves believe that they are better than what they actually really are, are vain/stupid.
no need to bother with any of them.
