Advice on negotiating salary?
I have an offer to work at a new company. It's about a 30% pay rise for me, and will put me on £45k. I'm not exactly sure of which role it is yet (waiting for the email/letter with the full details), but it could be that they will pay up to £50k (or could be just £46.5k).
How best to approach salary negotiation?
Aim 35-40% higher than what you expect. Haggle down to a reasonable salary.

Always demand more then what you want that way when you barter you give some but end up where you wanted to be

That's always a chance. First, how dynamic is the job market in your field/area? Back in the dot-com bust a friend of mine was offered a job, asked for a day or so to think about it and they said no. People were begging for jobs back then.
Second, understand what the market value of the job is. If you go in with a 30-40% over what you want and what you actually want IS market value, they will laugh at you. I'm sure they have second and third choices waiting for an offer. Know what you need know what the market will offer and if they align, you have your answer.
