Let's help those that are younger than us (or older trying to make a change) choose their careers or give general advice to those that are unsure and trying to find their path in life or generally get one another into positions to better their lives and those around them.

Let's talk options and advice on
>Universities and college (Bachelor's, masters, and PhDs) life and experiences
>Medical careers
>Law careers
>Trades
>Military careers
>Agriculture and forestry
>Minimum wagecucks
>Government (local and national)
>Police and firefighting
>Freight (train, ship, aircraft, or truck)
>Transportation (pilots)
>Stock market careers
>Freelance work or writing
>Self employment/business owners
>Those that don't want to be NEETs anymore

Help your fellow anons out.

Let's do some good and help each other on to the right paths for us.

>PhD in chemistry working in industry.

hey anon, currently 28 last year of a music degree, looking for internships, and thesis, looking into trade school for luthierie.

Interested if anyone has any thoughts on breaking into the instrument fabrication field, schooling for CNC and fabrication, and music oriented careers.
>>
Currently a sophomore at college undecided major. Was gonna to finance, but lost interest and have been delving deep into crypto currencies. How does one get into that field? Probably just gonna major in econ or info science for front end dev, will that lead to a good career path? Also have a large interest in writing and have written some scripts and thinking of transferring to film school but it seems like a very risky major any advice on the industry?
>>
Freshman in Earth Sciences.
Any geologist, or people working in the ineral exploration here?
>>
>>18617504
I never really thought about instrument fabrication as a career. Do you even need a music degree for that? I would feel you'd need education in mechanics with a focus in acoustics. We've covered oscillation in class a little, and the theory is pretty interesting - especially when it comes to dampening and destructive interference.

>>18617518
I always say only enter creative fields if that's all you can and all you want to do. You have to be really passionate about your craft if you wanna live off that. Additionally, there's tons of resources online to help you improve your writing, and as more and more uni classes are being digitized and being made available for everyone, the need to dedicate a higher education diminishes each year.
As for cryptocurrency, I'd be very careful. There's a lot of potential, but like any other explosive market it's very volatile and highly prone to crashing. Take the internet for example, it's been around for a while now but it can still turn on a dime - web developer used to be a very reliable career, but ever since services like Squarespace popped up that let you make your own high-quality websites, a lot of companies had to close down because people didn't need them anymore.
>>
>>18617541
So music degree is not necessary, but I also did private performance instruction for a while, and the degree is nice. School did not have an acoustics department, I've never been amazing at math (not horrible either), I have a buddy who went that way up to masters and got some excellent job offers, but it's not my skill set. The jobs market in luthierie seem really varied all the way from pretty menial entry level fabrication up to people making +100k a year off a hand full of instruments. A buddy in the field told me CNC operators have a much better entry (in the 40k range) because alot of the industry side has gone automated. Anyone with experience getting certs in CNC/CAD feedback appreciated, been trying to find an associates program that will get me what i need without spending too much time or money
>>
>>18617597
I'll be starting my third semester in mechanical engineering so I haven't had any experience with CNC yet, and that's probably not what you're looking for. I don't really know what the requirements are to be a CNC operator, but I imagine it varies from country to country. If you want to get a headstart on CAM however, you can do that right now. Check out Autodesk Fusion 360 if you haven't already, it's an all-in-one CAD program that also lets you do everything you need for CAM and engineering, plus it's free.
>>
pro-tip for anyone intrested , when going to uni ask about a program called jumpstart/fastmode it will probably vary
basically it's a program colleges use for students who want to get through college quicker
you will have to pay and set it up with them early in the summer because it will take a while to complete
the program allows you to take up to 2 years of college the first 2 anyway , in about a month or so basically 1 year per month or so basically what they do is the person testing you will give you a shit load of packets and you'll be sitting for about 8 hours over an x amount of days and all you have to do is complete all the packets given to you their will be a shit load per class , note i was given each class separate , and if you pass all the packets quote on quote the class you will be given 1 year of college credit without ever actually attending any of the classes , to get the second year you'll basically need to repeat the same process
> note this is for people who have a very good understanding of what they will be studying and have a good grip on basically everything else since you must pass all with a b , in my case anyway

I'm a 20 year old in the Air Force. I've got a great opportunity to go to the Academy and commission as an officer.

Ever since I was a kid I wanted to either fly airplanes or fight in combat. As an officer I can become a pilot or a combat rescue officer which is like special ops rescue/medic.

I'm really struggling to decide, pilot would be more lucrative and cool without any of the trauma, but CRO would be the biggest challenge I'd ever have to face.

What do

I will be 27 this month. I dropped out of university back when my mother died and have done menial semi-skilled jobs in different places. The thing I have the most experience with is veterinary assistant, but I've hit a plateau with wages. You can become a certified vet tech, but the amount of money you have to pour into those programs vs the pay you get out of it (which is not that much more than someone in certified, maybe $3-$5 more per hour) isn't worth it imo.

My education background was in animal sciences, geared towards meat science before I dropped out of uni.

I am kinda aimless now. I want to get a better job with more compensation for effort (you put a lot of effort and skill into vet assist without compensation. Like I know how to draw blood and run an entire IDEXX machine profile by myself, do simple dosaging, doing dentals, dealing with really aggressive animals). It isn't my vet underpaying me, it is just that way.

I really want to get a certification for...something. I like to write, if that helps.

I am a gril, so I don't know if fields like electrician aren't open to women? Or if it is a hard vocation that requires more physical strength? I know electricians are desperately needed and make decent pay. I wouldn't mind doing something along those lines.

Thanks in advance for any advice.
>>
>>18617518
Drop the interest in crypto for now, because you have to have a large sum of money to invest. Most of the time you will also have to buy or rent a warehouse to keep enough mining machines to make a viable amount of currency. Then you have to cool that warehouse because of all the machinery. Then the bubble bursts and you're SOL.

Why do you think the majority of miners are young rich Chinese men who use daddy's funds to start an operation, only to abandon it?

It's highly worth it but you just have to mentally be up for it and want to help people. Don't do it for money or status or else you'll kill yourself from the work loads.
>>
>>18619398
I know people say if you want to get rich there are far better alternatives to medicine, well what are those alternatives, out of curiosity?
>>
>>18619442
I don't think you understand, your motivation is entirely misplaced.
>>
>>18619446
No, it isn't. I'm asking out of curiosity.
>>
>>18619448
You perceive the medical field primarily as a route to get rich. This is not the way to approach this if you actually want to make money in the profession and get rich.
>>
>>18619453
I see the medical field as a very rewarding career in terms of changing peoples lives for the better. I segued into something else.
>>
>>18619442
I don't really know about get rich. It really depends on. Luck of where you work and how well you succeed. Hell you could be Trump rich in realestate or stock brokering but that requires all luck with the markets.

Only thing I can think of is politicians. They make way too much money.
>>
>>18619459
Then why are you so worried about financial compensation and bring it up as a priority?

I am a CNP at a fairly respectable hospital. Our best doctors and surgeons didn't go into the profession with money as a top priority.

I broke my ankle three months ago. Luckily one of the best orthopedics works at my hospital. He got 3 opinions for 3 other doctors before proceeding with diagnosis and treatment, and he is an older gentleman among the best in his field. He also makes a shitload of money because people pay for his knowledge and passion.

My mother's melanoma specialty oncologist at MD Anderson was among the best in the world, and obviously made shitloads of money. However, he had passion for his work, research, and patients. One time he saw me alone in the hospital hallway and sat down with me for 25 minutes after he was supposed to leave for the day going over options, explaining my mother's prognosis and scenario, and showing empathy.

My point is that as a doctor you can't really succeed financially without passion for your specialization.

As >>18619470 if a primary motivation for you is money, then unless you're able to wedge yourself into a pharmacy company (which is more business than medical oriented anyway) L, you're better off doing investment or other things.

No one wants a doctor like that. Even House has autistic passion for figuring out what is wrong with someone health-wise.
>>
>>18619503
Not just passion but they have to be good too. I have a passion for painting but I fucking suck gimp ass at it.
>>
>>18619515
I'm the person you respond to and I agree too. When I first started clinicals in BA nursing school, we had the most significant dropout rate. People couldn't handle patient interaction, blood/gore/shit/vomit, and those without the skill to find a vein or empathize with needle/blood pressure wraps/injuries also struggled.

I remember this one classmate literally shouting at a boy to stop his ankle from shaking while it was at a stressed angle for an x-ray. As someone who broke their ankle, it disturbed me how callous she was and she didn't realize it was an involuntary response to pain suppression
>>
>>18619459
Assume you are from burgerland but medicine in Aus is e z life with e z money

Financial incentive greatly outlasts altruistic ones as my dentistry friend once told me.

First year junior medical officer here
>>
>>18619535
That was one thing that stopped me from being a doctor. Empathy. I have zero of it I always became somewhat squeemish to blood over time for some reason.

I recently broke my ankle too. The staff was so caring in trying to help me with my leg for the initial X-rays.
>>
>>18619537
Kek, first year. This is why you think that.
>dentist

Well dentists are an exception. The uncle of my spouse makes shitloads because he moved to a rural poor location in New Mexico that had no pediatric dentists, so because he has no competition or empathy he charges whatever he wants. The children's families from the Native reservations are really in debt to him, he has a great financial system going.

But he isn't really that superior of a dentist. My previous dentist/orthodontist invented the lower lingual arch and didn't charge the rates for a simple cleaning my uncle in-law does.

Diminishing returns.

Hey /adv/,
I'm half-way through my undergraduate for mechanical engineering. I've been looking through internships, but the problem is, I don't know what the hell to do.
Mechanical is such an expansive field, I'm left dumbfounded when I try to find what specifically I should train for a job. I'm talking things like piping, HVACs, manufacturing, transportation, design work, etc... I know they all maintain the same relative shared knowledge in mechanics, software, and applications, but I'm looking for one as a career.

Does anyone have experience with finding the job they wanted through internships? How many did you go through before you found the right one?
Thanks in advance!
>>
>>18619559
Being a first year I still interact with every level on the medical chain, so i'm not sure why you discount my opinion so. There are options to suffer a surgical lifestyle if you are so inclined. But there are ones like general practice, dermatology and radiology that are very lifestyle orientated. The former one being the most accessible will net the doc triple the average salary as a bottom line alone. If anything I find competitive drive trumps all else in terms of success in medicine, moreso than altruism or empathy.
>>
Haven't read all the comments, will try to.

Currently work in economic research at an elite school, studied economics in undergrad at another elite school. First-generation college student. Ask about anything from attending college when you're parents haven't (especially a wealthier school, where that'll matter more), to what studying economics is really about (mostly math), to what working in research is like (mostly coding)
>>
>>18619601
I found with experience in the profession that doctors without primarily interest and secondary empathy were often less skilled in dexterity because they didn't have an electrical "Operation" Board game feedback. They also got less referrals as specialists.

They functioned better with robots doing most of the work (for instance the top cardiologist in the state I used to work in also happened to use some of the most robotics assisted surgeries in the nation) for them, and thus didn't make as much money because of malpractice expense, which contributed to the expense of the robots oddly.

As I stated before, even fiction reflects this. House was a successful physician due to interest in the field. My sister's neurologist isn't a nice man, but he was the best for a reason. And he showed actual interest in epilepsy and the brain.
>>
>>18619585
I did HVAC because my uncle has a business and offered me apprenticeship and work experience in the trade. Best thing that ever happened to me and opened up a lot of opportunities, even internationally. As an entry level apprentice I was able to easily land a gig in Hawaii for $40/hour and I'm always receiving offers and referrals even though I have less than 3 years experience.
>>
>>18619608
Does your program give you exposure to the software side of things such as using ANOVA, R, and tableau? Not sure if that is more econ based or information systems but is what I'd like to continue getting experience in.

>Medical careers

I'm a resident in Neurology, 2nd year, but I also went through 2 years of Internal Medicine.

Medicine really helps if what you want is respect -- both from family, friends, and strangers. Gets you laid a lot as well.

Still, you give up your youth (and a good deal of your health) if you decide you want a specialty, which is something 90% of med students want.

I fucking HATE being on call, and you can get so burned out that you stop caring about patients. Seriously, guys, fuck you if you go to the ER at 3 am with some shit that has been bothering you for weeks, or if it's some stupid, menial annoyance that could wait til the next day.
>>
>>18619975
What'd you like better internal or neuro?
>>
>>18620003

Neuro, but I felt I was better at internal. Then again, you really have to relearn medicine for neurology.
>>
>>18620012
Any advice for an undergrad seeking med school route?
>>
>>18620017

Grades are really important, as you may imagine. Also, you really have to be sure you can take shit from your higher ups if you want to be a resident. Being on call will rob you of your soul, and you may end up having death fantasies. Also: surgeons don't know medicine -- at all. If you're in a clinical specialty, prepare to babysit the entire hospital.

It's all worth it, though. Any hard work done with enough love and skill always feels great. Medicine is no exception.
>>
>>18620029
Thanks. Are there any particular things I should start doing as a freshman and continue through to senior year that will help me out? I know shadowing is always a good idea.

>Mfw enter organic II class of 200 as one of only 3 actual chemistry majors
>Professors walks in asks by a show of hands, what major are you or if you desire school
>Premed: nearly 80% of the class
>"Welp about half of you will be changing your majors in two months"
>Mfw he was right and the class shed nearly 110 people by November
>>
>>18620474
What makes organic chem so dreadful?
>>
>>18620503
A lot of students just mentally aren't up for it. Too many go in thinking it's all just memorization and don't. Other to actually understand the concept that enable organic chemistry. I was top five in the Organic one and two because I read the book, went to office hours habitually, and bothered to understand the material. Nearly everyone else had stacks and stacks and stacks of flashcards. For name reactions and some reagent common name it makes sense but these are people trying to memorize problem solving.
>>
>>18620726
>And don't bother

Fuggin phone reeeeeee
>>
>>18620726
>>18620503
And also, it's not as dreadful as people make it out to be. It's vastly different from the general chemistries and other courses and all previous study habits do not work for it. If you aren't prepared for that you get totally fucked by it.
>>
>>18618817
there are courses that can allow you to diversify
what your veterinary skills are and are very
interesting and allow you too move into some
different fields for example you can do a few small courses to do with animal enrichment and more
exotic animal care which can lead to higher pay
and the chance to travel the world and earn pretty decent wages
Only one problem is competitiveness

Engineering just seems to suck ass in general tbqh. 4 years of expensive and hard schooling, competing for "experience", then 5 years to even get to PE, only to start being phased out when you start reaching your 40's for younger, cheaper, and more motivated workers.

My parents keep telling me that I should never watch anime, read manga, read any politically incorrect book, or listen to any music other than pop and hip-hop because if I get accused for a crime wrongfully, it would all be considered evidence for me being "weird" and then this would taint the family name.

She actively digs through my PC and phone to find something that rubs her the wrong way so she can threaten to kill me, throw me out, etc. I'm trying to move out but she constantly interferes whenever I sign up for driving lessons, look for a cheap car and so on. I work around 55 hours a week and go to community college.

How do I move out and get the street smarts to live on my own so this shit can stop?

I finished my bachelors at the age of 26 in January 2017 in Business Administration with a major in Finance.it took me 6 years to graduate. Its been 7 months and iv only given 2-3 job interviews and i was rejected..i think my age and the time span in which i graduated is hindering my way to get a job.How can i tackle this situation?
>>
Going into my first year of Computer Science, I haven't done anything code related but I am looking forward to it. Only part that I'm worried about is that I'm god awful at math because I don't study enough.

What am I getting myself into?
>>
>>18625607
I don't know where you live, and I can't give you advice on how to get a job.

But what I can tell you is that your age and inexperience doesn't completely remove your shot at a job. I have a close friend that decided to go for another bachelor's ( he majored in cog system and then wanted to do comp sci), and he spent about 7 years in school back-to-back. He graduated at 25 and his first job offer came from google despite having little to no experience.

Do you have any work related experience that you can use in those 6 years? Do you want to risk travelling for your first job?

Doing mechanical engineering as well, and I am currently doing a summer internship at a manufacturing facility where I work in sand mold core fabrication.
It's a very low-level job anyone could do, but I'm mostly doing it so I can actually see some aspect of the theory I've been learning in person and so I can get some hands-on experience.
It's probably not what you are asking for, but as far as I can tell metallurgy can always use more muscle.

Better get studying, you need math my dude. You can't escape it you need to know it for any stem field.
Pick up a calculus book, and start doing the problems. There is also a shitload of calc videos you can watch online.
Also, take up a double major if possible, putting all of your eggs in one basket is not great.
>>
Is there a cutoff point at which you're too late to make uni friends? I started last year and I only managed to befriend one guy who I barely see because we share very few classes since he already did some when he tried for another bachelor.
I made several attempts trying to find or start a study group, but nothing ever came of it. Am I doomed to walk the campus alone?

I live in Pakistan. And no i do not have any work experience. And travelling i'm always open to travel because i want to leave this country

Oh then you're probably fucked. But I guess keep trying? ask if your family has any connections to help you with the job search.

Iv got another question, what are my chances of getting a scholarship abroad considering my academic mess ?

I want to become a plumber or electrician. Someone who knows what they are talking about should explain the pros and cons of each.

i want to teach english in japan

>>18625703
No there is no cut off. But it does become more difficult with each passing semester due to difficulty, scheduling, and not being in dorms anymore after freshman year. If your looking for in major friends, see if your major has any professional societies or clubs.
>>
Due to a variety of reasons which aren't important here since it's not sob story time, I'll only be able to actually graduate close to or past 30. How fucked are my career prospects, and what fields would minimize that degree of fucked?
>>
>>18626229
>how fucked are my career prospects

considering you're 8 years late to the game, unless you have some relevant experience quite fucked i would say
>>
>>18626254
Yeah that's what I thought.
I don't really fancy being a hobo, though, so if anyone has any advice on what the fuck to do, it'd be appreciated.

It's too late for me brothers.
Go on without me.

You'll be fine. I have a friend from uni who turned 40 this year, and another is literally old enough to be my mother.

25 year old NEET residing in U.S. here. Pretty much dropped out of community college after years of taking courses I would later flunk because of attendance. I spent a whole half year out of my entire adult life working, and that was 2 years ago in a grocery store. I've signed up for the military, but due to a specific set of circumstances I'm in, I don't know if they'll even let me in or not (for the record, I'm not injured anywhere and I have no criminal record thanks to my predilection for staying indoors).

My parents are aging, I don't want to be a leech any more than I have been already, and I'd like to start doing something pretty fucking soon. You hear all those sob stories from NEETs who complain that they have a giant void in their resume, and that they have no marketable skills. The only thing that sets me apart from most of them is that I also speak Korean, which I don't know has much value.

Short-term, I'll have to find employment to save up money and contribute to the meager income my parents bring in. Long-term, I'd want to find a way to get into a lucrative trade. Comfortable job with high salary would be optimal, but I'll take extra money over sanity if I had to choose.

IT sounds like a promising area, if only because I feel an affinity to any career related to computers, and because it's supposedly less challenging than other industries to break into without a bachelor's degree (or even an associates; I fucked up hard). Finagling a job in that field sounds like a considerable challenge with both no experience and no degree, though. All those testimonials from people who landed jobs through microdegree programs from online classes sound dubious, and while people say Cisco certifications are in demand, I doubt the prospective employers are going to treat those as anything more than icing on the cake, so to speak.

In the meanwhile, I don't even know where to start looking for an immediate job.

Send help, /adv/.

I'd say get anything entry level that you possibly can that's as closely related to IT as possible like helpdesk.

This gives you a gage for what sort of entry level requirements are needed which are usually a few easy to get certs, some income to start working with, and a feel for where to go next.

It's really just about grinding and strategically planning your moves.

I'll be starting my third semester of my studies in mechanical engineering, and while I'm set on getting a master in it, I am still very open as to what I want to specialize in. I'm interested in a lot of things and could see myself doing bionics and automotive just as much as aerodynamics and robotics, so for now I want to prioritize a field that holds the best stability and salary.
What would you recommend I should look at if I wanted a secure job that lets me crack 6 figures within my career?

I'm a fucking Social Worker and it's so shit, you deal with the worst kinds of scum all day, you work with 90% women, who were just smart enough to get this degree but so stupid they think it's an accomplishment, and the pay sucks.

I wanted to go to trade school. I wanted to be an apprentice. I should have but I was terrified of disappointing my parents so I kept changing degrees til I found the easiest one I could pass with no effort.

Anyway I want to do something real, something tangible. The thing is I have no hands on or technical experience so I'm not sure I have any leverage to attain an adult apprenticeship. Any advice?

I'm a 20 year old guy, got my GED, left highschool for medical reasons (and because it was pretty shit). I've taken a college class because I got really high results on my "early diploma" tests and they paid for the class. I have about 3 years retail experience and been jobless and no school for about 6 months. I'm not sure what direction to go in, I have passion for writing and the arts but I also want something substantial and to make money. I know fuck all about this side of life or how to get money aside from moving up in a company by working my ass off for 20 years. I'm the only one in my family to be as successful as I currently am if that gives any perspective. I have no one to let down but also almost no money.
The dream would be to open a nice little coffee shop where I can sit with my dog and talk with customers and write all day.

Any advice for an Australian uni student majoring in economics to join organisations such as the AFP and DIO after uni???
>>
Last year in high school(17 year old) guy with kind of a talent in math and informatics (good at competitive programming, and know lot of technical stuff as well) from a poor country. Which university should I go, which degree? If I try I think I should be able to get myself in top uni like MIT(I have good resume :) ). I myself believe that a CS degree can't teach me anything(that I couldn't learn myself or already know), but I would get money from it (which I do want :D )... but I also want to learn interesting stuff that I would be unable to do myself like advanced math or physics. Any suggestions?

There's a lot of fields that intersect your interests, like Computer-Assisted Engineering. As time goes on, it already gets harder and harder to survive in the market with a "pure" education - mathematicians have to be proficient in programming, engineers need to understand calculus with complex numbers etc, so you'll get opportunities to develop yourself laterally.
Where do you live?

Bump past all you sad boys.
