She'll be there for ever. The therapist will milk her like a cow for years. She will get nothing sorted out but she'll be less of a pain in the ass because she'll have someone who listens to her nonsense and pays attention to her bullshit for 45 minutes several times a week.

You are more complicated than you think. The solution to Simple Problem A may very well require figuring out Deeper Problems B, C and D.

If all you want is a Band-aid surgery on Problem A, make that clear to the shrink from the start. He may be willing to do MASH-type crude-but-temporarily-effective work with you.

If the therapist is any good, he'll start noticing any personaoity disorders pretty quickly. If he feels they are a hindrance to your mum's functioning (or the people around her), he'll slowly ease into mentioning them and working them out. If this is possible, of course. Some personality disorders can barely be fixed because lack of self-reflection is a major part of the problem. From the top of my head, narcisism is one of those.

Provided of course that said therapist is any good.
